By: Jade N How would you feel if you were pushed beyond your limit? In this short story “The Scarlet Ibis.” Doodle is a character who is pushed beyond his limit by an unappreciative/selfish older brother. The three things I’ll summarize in this story are: Doodle being pushed too hard, the eldest brother secretly wanting to kill Doodle, and Lastly, How the brother tried to put Doodle in a special development program.
Doodle was pushed too hard by; his older brother would continue to say to him, “Doodle, do you want to learn to walk?”(page182) My opinion on ‘the brother is he is very selfish.’ He is ashamed to have Doodle as a brother because he can’t play or act like a normal boy/brother. He wants a brother he can play with. So that is why he takes Doodle to Old Woman Swamp to help he practice walking.
Doodle’s brother wanted to kill him because he said/thought Doodle Wasn’t “All There.”(page181) In the story it states what he wants to do. What he wants to do is smother Baby Doodle with a pillow. He didn’t do it because ‘he was grinned at from Doodle.’ So he ended up yelling to their mom “Mama, He’s All There! He’s All There!!”
Doodle’s brother prepared a development program for him. He says, “Of course Mama and Papa didn’t know about.” The program consisted on Doodle learning how to run, swim, climb a tree; fight. They got off on a good start, “Come on Doodle do you want to be different from everybody else from school?”(page184) The older brother would question. ‘So Doodle would continue on.’ I believe at this point Doodle is just as fragile, out of place and dead as the Scarlet Ibis he buried.
My conclusion is Doodle dies because he was pushed too hard. I think the brother feels guilty because if he would have never left Doodle he wouldn’t have died. Lesson be learned don’t be so pushy and selfish because it never helps only adds more burden. The Scarlet Ibis and Doodle where very similar and his brother can still see the
