Mrs. Medlock is a cruel housekeeper and nurse at the Craven mansion. She may be the cruelest character throughout the movie, but she still wants to belong and wants to be loved. She is the main protagonist in The Secret Garden because she changes the most out of all of the characters. She also shows the most of the theme of wanting to be loved and belonging. One example of this is when Mary says, “It was lonely in India.” This shows that Mary wants to be loved and that she wants to fit in because in India she wasn’t alone, but she might as well have been. She didn’t connect with anyone in India. The symbol that shows that Mary wants to be loved and accepted is the nursery rhyme “Mary, Mary”. This shows love and craving acceptance because when the kids on the train sing the nursery rhyme to her it makes her feel left out and alone because none of the kids singing the song are her friends so it makes her feel bad about herself. Later when Dickon sings the rhyme about her, it makes her feel like she has found a real friend in Dickon and she feels accepted. One scene that shows Mary wanting to be loved and accepted is the climax scene in which Lord Craven and Colin Craven let her into their lives, love her, and accept her for who she is and everything she has been through. Lord Craven was hidden and secretive, but as the movie goes on, he learns to open his heart to love and accept his son, Colin, and his niece, Mary. Colin was hidden from the word and scared of opening his heart to new people, but he learned to face his fears and let other people into his life. Mary, being the protagonist, had to face a lot before she can finally learn to accept the love from others and learn to love for herself. Throughout the whole movie, the characters, Mrs. Medlock, Lord Craven, Colin, and Mary, had to open themselves up before others could love and accept them.
