The Crucible Mary Warren Character Analysis

In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, the character who has a major impact on the village is Mary Warren. Even though Mary is John Proctor’s maid, and claims she will always do the right thing, she needs the help of Abigail Williams. Although, Mary is afraid of Abigail and all the things she can do, Abigail is known for being deceitful and clever, and that is exactly what Mary Warren wants to be when the time comes. Mary Warren gets herself out of trouble with Judge Danforth and Hathorne during the trials because she learned how to be just like Abigail. Throughout the play, Mary shows Salem what she is capable of so her reputation and her name are left unharmed. Mary’s fear of Abigail Williams causes her betrayal of John Proctor and her dishonesty starts to form chaos in Salem. She shocks the entire court room and she especially shocks John Proctor. John never wants for Mary to act like Abigail, but that was too late. He does not want to lose yet another maid, he had lost Abigail because they had an affair and now he was about to lose Mary because she has fallen into Abigail’s temptation. He quickly goes over to talk to Mary to see what was going on in her heart, but Mary screams and claims John as “the Devil’s man” (110), and that “he [came] at [her] by night and everyday” (110). A betrayed John Proctor, is now hurt and Mary acts like she does not care. Now Mary makes it seem like John is a liar and that causes his reputation to look bad. She starts to act like another version of Abigail, very devious and deceitful. Mary is doing everything she possibly can so her life and reputation are spared and if she has to betray the Proctors, even though they have been so kind to her, then so be
