The bird was like Minnie Foster. The bird is trapped in the birdcage just like how Minnie is trapped in her bad marriage. The sheriff’s wife said, “She--come to think of it, she was kind of like a bird herself.” This is quite ironic because she symbolizes the bird and the bird is later found dead, just like her soul. Minnie Foster is just like the trapped bird in the cage because she was trapped in a bad marriage.…

Well this is the most confusing ending that includes Emily murdering her sweetheart. This is when all the smells developed and the townspeople put lime in her basement. This is symbolic because lime is usually put in the ground before the coffin of the deceased is placed in the ground. The “rose for Emily” was the room where she neatly placed the body of Homer Barron. The room was described as having “rose-shaded lights” and the curtains giving off a “faded rose color”. Knowing from having a girlfriend, many women like to dry out their roses in order to keep them forever, maybe in Emily’s distorted mind she wanted to keep Homer forever. She kept good care of him, which is exemplified by her dressing Homer in nightclothes and laying him on the bed. There was even an iron gray hair found on the indented pillow next to him signifying Emily has been lying next to…

When the women are looking around downstairs they come across a bird cage in the cupboard. Mrs Hale observes the door is broken off and someone must have been "rough with it," suggesting the motive for the crime. When Mrs. Hale looks inside Mrs. Wrights sewing box hoping to find scissors she finds a box and inside is the dead bird wrapped in silk. The birds neck looked as if it had been strangled. The women recall that when Minne Foster was younger she was lively, wore pretty clothes and sung in the choir, they said "I heard she used to wear pretty clothes and be lively, when she was Minnie Foster, one of the town girls singing in the choir." The bird represented Minnie before she was married to Mr. Wright. Mrs. Hale says, "She-come to think of it, she was kind of like a bird herself-real sweet and pretty, but kind of timid and-fluttery. How- she- did- change." Minne and the bird were both caged, the bird was in stuck in an actual cage and Minne was stuck in the house all the time. Mr. Wright changed Mrs. Wright, he took all those good things away, he was controlling he didn’t allow her to see her friends or leave the house, he even stopped her from singing. The bird was her motive…

As the narrator describes the rosebush, he offers a rose to the reader “to symbolize some sweet moral blossom that may be found along the track, or relieve the darkening close of a tale of human frailty and sorrow,” (Hawthorne 42). This foreshadows the story will be forlorn. The rose is an offer to comfort the reader at the end of a disheartening novel. The rosebush also symbolizes life and beauty surrounded by a dreary world of sorrow. Outside of the prison door, the lively rosebush grows next to many weeds. This shows a truly beautiful flower can arise from a complete barren region. The rosebush is mentioned again later in the novel. At the governor’s house, “Pearl, seeing the rosebushes, began to cry for a red rose, and would not be pacified,” (Hawthorne 95). This carries over from the symbolism in chapter one. Although Pearl acts like a child of the devil, filled with darkness and mystery, she can be sweet and delicate by holding a single rose.…

After Pedro and Rosaura’s marriage, Tita is acknowledged for her first anniversary as the ranch cook. To congratulate Tita, Pedro hands a bouquet of roses to her. Tita, making her way to the kitchen, holds Pedro’s roses so tightly that “the roses, which had been mostly pink, had turned quite red from the blood that was flowing from Tita’s hands and breasts” (48). Pedro’s roses for Tita show the romantic relationship he wants to have with her, however, his love has harmful consequences shown through the blood coming from Tita’s chest. Blood indicates pain or hurt to the affected person. Likewise, Tita’s blood from the roses represent the pain and damage of her heart, resulting from Pedro’s love for her. Instead of throwing the blood petals away, Tita uses them to make a quail dish for the family gathering. When Tita finished eating her dish, her reaction was startling, for “Tita wasn’t there, even though her body was sitting up quite properly in her chair; there wasn’t the slightest sign of life in her eyes” (52). Tita’s lifelessness is one detrimental effect of Pedro’s love for her. She ate the quail, containing the bloody red rose petals representing Pedro’s painful love. When she consumed his love and the pain, it left her lifeless and dead. Pedro’s love in the end had only destroyed Tita. Pedro’s bouquet of roses that bled Tita and sucked the life out of…
