The Significance Of Tartans In Pixar's Brave
Pixar has taken a story of a mother and daughter and laced it with magical Scotland tradition. Family always comes first in almost any culture and is the main focus of Brave. Many Scotland Traditions are shown during the film and history is always present. Who doesn’t like a little magic to make a movie interesting. In Brave by Pixar the Scotland culture comes alive in color, music, and a wonderful story. Introductions are made to a lively crew of characters. Merida, the main character is all spit and fire with the red hair to match. 40% of the population carries the gene for red hair in Scotland. She is very strong will and determined to make it on her own; only one problem, she is a princess. Her dad, King Fergus is loving, loyal, and …show more content…
They even play tug of war. Girls are seen dancing Scottish jigs, while pipers play the bag pipes highlighting their importance in the culture. Tartans are made out of woven wool and made in an arrangement of different colors and a variety of strip widths. Tartans have been around since the 5th or 6th Century and each clan has its own pattern of tartan and is worn as a way of identifying which clan you belong to. Tartans are one of the most important symbols for Scotland and are worn in many styles. Holding true in the movie, the four clans presented are wear four different types of tartans (plaids). The Clan Dun Broch (Merida’s Family) wears a tartan in the pattern of blue background, a red square and highlighted by a yellow cross in the middle of the square. Clan Macintosh wears a tartar with a red background and green lines outlined in yellow. Clan MacGuffin, is a green background with red strips that make the squares. It is the opposite of the Macintoshes. Clan Dingwall is a light yellow with plaid of green and red. The men wear the tartans in the style of a long plaids are worn over one shoulder and belted around the waist, kind of like a toga. The women in the movie do not wear the tartan not even the house maid. This is not usually for the time. The tartan was usually worn by most people in the clan, maybe because of the royal statues they wore finer
