“The Sniper,”depicts that ever action you take has consequences. The author tells this by the sniper shooting the enemy sniper and when the sniper goes to see who he shot
he sees the eyes of his brother. To back this up here’s a part of the story that goes along,” Then when the smoke cleared he peered across and uttered a cry of joy. His enemy has been hit.’(O’Flaherty 214)The the sniper turned over the body dead body looked into his brother’s face.”(O’Flaherty 215) The quotes above, from “The Sniper”, show that the republican sniper had no remorse when he saw his enemy fall to death but when he looked at the enemy and saw his brother he felt guilt for what he had done. That’s what “The Sniper” is about and the theme of it.
“Crane,” is a story that shows friendships are key in life. In the story the author explains that the characters care for each other and lets the two friends go and live their lives. An example of how the author interrupts it would be this,”’Hey, how come you’re standing there like you’re dumb? Go flush the crane!,” Only did Tōkche catch on. He started crawling among the weeds.”(Sunwōn 227) This piece ,from “Crane,” shows Sōngsam telling Tōkche to run away and also shows that friends have your back. “Cranes” is a story about everlasting friendships and memories.
“The Sniper” and “Crane” have many similarities and differences, here are some similarities. “The Sniper” and “Crane” both share the same ideas/theme almost. They both talk about a loss and both take place during and after war. “The Sniper” and “Crane” do you have some differences and here’s one, in “Crane” they talk about friendships but in “The Sniper” they don’t talk about friendship instead it talks about the struggle of being part of the war. But “The Sniper” has a more effective message and deeper meaning. Unlike “Crane” in “The Sniper” it explains that even though the joy of winning is nice the sacrifices made to win are not sometimes worth it.
“The Sniper,” is very depictive and the theme is very inspirational. But “Crane” had a theme that many could use in there lives and that is that friendships are key in life. “The Sniper's” theme interprets that any action has consequences. These themes can be used in real life, like making friends at school and those friends helping you with things you need helps with. Another example ,but for “The Snipers” theme, would be if you don’t study and play video games you would most likely fail on the test for not studying. “The Sniper” and “Crane” are both great stories and inspirational text.
