The Spirit Club Case
As a lower ranking official in a club, it may be intimidating to bring up issues within the club, especially if it is against a high-ranking official. In this situation Erica found a problem in the Spirit Club’s financials at the end of the year that could easily be fixed. To make matters more difficult, the problem was directly related to Matt, the president of the club and Erica’s close friend. As the treasurer of the Spirit Club, Erica knew that “anywhere from $70 to $350” was missing from the sale of club t-shirts that should have been deposited into the club’s account by Matt. Without this extra money the club would be put in a tough situation and only have $400 for the next academic year. She wanted what was best for the group, but didn’t …show more content…
First, Erica had framed the issue as a big problem for the club. However, Matt may not realize the severity of the problem because he will be graduating and not part of the club the following year. Next, Erica is only a sophomore and trying to be obedient to the authority figure of the club. As the treasurer she is trying to follow the president’s orders. Finally, looking at the basis of the locus to loyalty, Erica knows this may hurt the club financially, but doesn’t want to hurt her relationship with Matt in the process of making things right. With these in mind, Erica has a tough decision to make, but has people to support her in coming to a resolution that benefits …show more content…
Since she had already mentioned the mistake to him and he did not correct it, Erica needs to take a different approach. This time, Erica and Laura should confront Matt so that he understands the severity of the issue. When the two meet with him, they should bring all proper documentation to show where the mistake is and where it could lead the club. After providing all of the details, Matt should be given a short timeframe to deposit the missing funds. After explaining this, Erica and Laura need to be clear of the repercussions if he forgets or decides not to comply. This would lead to getting an administrator in the Student Activities Office involved and could lead to academic consequences for Matt. However, if he fixes the issue at hand, the club will be set up to succeed the next academic year and no one will have to face the consequences of the Student Activities

The defendant had been employed at a large department store for more than 25 years. Because of her valuable years of experience in accounting with the store, she was in charge of accounts receivable at the store. Q2. Tamira has a responsibility as accountant for Picton to accurately complete the accounting cycle for Picton and to prepare the financial statements in a true and accurate manner, so that a third party can be confident in and rely upon them to make financial decisions. I would not have responded as she did. First of all, twenty-four hours to complete a year’s worth of adjusting entries and prepare financial statements to be relied upon by the bank to make a major financing decision regarding the company is not enough time; and even more importantly, honesty and integrity are vital in the accounting field. Tamira was not honest with the President about the way she prepared the financial statements. In my opinion, this was extremely unethical, because she estimated the expenses of the company in such a way that it could have resulted in an inaccurate picture of Picton’s financial health as a company. If I were in Tamira’s situation, I would first speak with the President and tell him that what he needed could not possibly be accomplished in 24 hours. Then I would…
