The Statue Zeus Of Artemision Or Poseidon

In this paper, I want to research the reasons behind the building of the statue Zeus of Artemision or Poseidon. A rendition of the almighty Olympian god, this statue was found in two pieces at the bottom of the sea in the 1920s. Between the ways that the statue is standing and the way the body is positioned one can assume that the person portrayed in the statue is action ready. In the case of Zeus, with his lightning bolts. In this paper, I will go into depth about the religious aspects behind the statue, the story of Zeus and how he came to be, and how the Greeks revolve around their gods. I would also like to talk about the style difference of this statue with the style of a statue only 100 years earlier in 590 BCE in the Archaic period to
show the difference between the shapes and positions of the bodies (Pictures provided). There is also a lot of controversy around whether the figure is Zeus or Poseidon or just a Grecian athlete. In the duration of my paper, I will be taking points from a panel of archeologists and authors, George P. Oekonomos, Christos Karouzos, H.G. Beyen, Carl Blumel, and Julius Juthner, to further understand what this piece actually represents. Between his appearance, his position, the grip of his hand and what exactly is missing from his hand, this will determine once and for all who the man is, portrayed in this statue. There is also the fact that there is no known artist to the creation of this sculpture. In other portrayals of Zeus, the painter’s rendition is very similar to the position of the body in the sculpture (Pictures provided).
