Most of the Acropolis had been destroyed or was in ruins after war with the Persians. Since this was around the time of Pericles coming to power most people looked to him for hope of rebuilding their city. Pericles began the reconstruction of the Acropolis around 460 and hired the best sculptors and architects to work on this project. The people who were put in charge of rebuilding the Acropolis were Phidias, Ictinus, and Callicrates. Ictinus and Callicrates were well known architects in Athens and would construct one of the most well known structures of all time the Parthenon. Pericles was in the process of reconstructing the long walls at this time therefore he had to leave this project to his two trusted architects. The Parthenon was built in the place of the Temple to Athena and would at one point be used as the treasury for the Delian League. In 437 the Propylaea, or the gates to the Acropolois, were being built by Mnesicles. These gates had columns made of Pentelic Marble which were built in place of the old gates which somewhat remained. Behind the gates a structure made by the great sculptor Phidias called the Promachos Athena stood at enormous heights. This was a gigantic bronze statue of Athena that was created in the time from 450-448 The last major structure that was being built during the time that Pericles ruled Athens was the Temple of Athena…

The Parthenon building in Athens was started in 447 BC and completed in 432. It represents a tangible and the visible power of the Athenian Empire. Having also the influence from the Athenian politician, Perikles. The Pantheon Building is in Rome, Italy and was constructed in 126 AD. The name Pantheon comes from the Greek language meaning ''every god''. It’s in a circular shape rather than the rectangular shape of the Parthenon Building in Athens. It is currently being used a Church dedicated to St. Mary and has been since the 7th century. For these buildings, I have found that the functionality or use of them has been quite different from each other. The Parthenon was used as both a treasury in the smaller rooms and as cult statues rooms in the larger areas.…

There is absolutely no doubt that society has changed drastically since the dawn of age. Whether it be how hunt for food, make weapons, or even construct the things around us, we are living in a very advanced society. While all these things may be true, we still borrow numerous ideas from these so called archaic societies. Statues used for decoration now were used for worship then yet still hold very similar structures. Long ago relief was one of not many techniques to create art and yet is still used commonly today. Even the architecture in our homes and public buildings is not so different than it was in places like ancient Rome. Although our advance in society is undeniable, things in our modern world are still majorly influenced by cultures that lived long ago.…

The architecture of a civilization is a window into its values and intended legacy. Greek religious architectural feats are often tied to expressing strength and power, which honor the gods. The Parthenon, built by Iktinos and Kalikrates, honors the legacy of Athens through divine allegory. So too does the The Altar of Zeus, a hellenistic temple from the Turkish city of Pergamon, embellish the city’s own prowess. Understanding the basis for this architecture is informative about the ways in which both cities intended to . Though the two buildings similarly celebrate their military victories and power, the Altar of Zeus is a transformation from the Parthenon’s adherence to classical architectural canon to a more dynamic and interactive…

The Greek Vases are the one of the most eminent art creations during the beginning of the 6th centuries and the end of the 4th centuries, the gallery of early European art / ancient Greece & Rome art from the museum, the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Center for the Visual Arts, have included and introduced several red and black figure vases from Greek. The one that appeals to me from a multitude of art pieces is the “Neck Amphora, 575-550 BCE, Black-figure terra cotta”, which was the vase created by the Castellani Painter in Greece, Archaic period. The vase not only shows the how great the technique that Greek ceramists have, the decorative paintings and images on the sides of the vase also have the symbolic or representative meaning in their life,…

Of all of the temples that were placed on the Acropolis, an over crop that looked over Athens, the Parthenon was the most important (Bangs 2004). It was built between 447 and 438 B.C. and dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena. Athena is the goddess of wisdom, the goddess of craft, and a war goddess. The Ancient Greeks were a culture that took their gods very seriously and did whatever they could to keep them happy. Throughout the Parthenon there were elaborate sculptures made out of marble. These sculptures, which were a part of the Parthenon frieze, are what the Elgin Marbles debate is all about.…

The architects of the Parthenon were Iktinos, Kallikrates, and Phidias. Although not much is known about Iktinos and Kallikrates, other than that they were partners in designing the Parthenon, Phidias was a very distinguished sculptor and architect at the time. While Iktinos and Kallikrates oversaw the structural aspect of the Parthenon, Phidias oversaw and designed all of the art and the sculpting aspects of the project. “Phidias is famous for three monuments to Athena on the Athenian Acropolis (the Athena Promachos, the Lemnian Athena, and the colossal Athena Parthenos for the Parthenon) and the colossal seated Zeus for the Temple of Zeus at Olympia” (Britannica). His last major project, the statue of Zeus, is considered one of his greatest masterpieces, along with the Athena Parthenos. After completing the statue of Zeus, Phidias died less than a year later in 430 b.c.…

Two ancient civilizations were separated by almost four-thousand miles and the Mediterranean Sea, yet still seemed to produce two incredibly similar and magnificent works of art. If that is not a worthy feat in itself, the two works of art were also created almost two-thousand years apart from each other before the two civilizations had any sort of major contact with one another. The similarities of the works, despite the time and distance, suggests that Ancient Egypt had more of an impact on Ancient Greece than was previously understood. By looking at these two works of art, a deeper understanding of the relations between the civilizations will be gained and explored in more detail.…

This classical Greek sculpture is titled the Riace Bronzes. The Riace statues are two life-size bronze statues each weighing nearly a ton. Statue A which is depicted above is of a young warrior, while statue B which is not depicted is of an older warrior wearing a helmet. In this analysis I will be concentrating on Statue A. The sculptor of this statue remains unknown; however most experts attribute this statue to Polyclitus, an expert Greek sculptor and mathematician, or one of his many disciples. The Riace is from the early Classical Period, made around 445 BCE. It was unexpectedly discovered in the Ionian Sea along with an ancient shipwreck off the coast of southern Italy in 1972. It was restored to its present condition. It once held a lance or spear like weapon in its right hand and a shield strapped to its left forearm. Possessions of weapons such as a shield and spear have earned the statue the title of warrior-hero. However, according to Dr. Jennifer Henrichs of Louisiana State University the statue “exhibits a visible headband thought to be the crowning base for a victory wreath typically reserved for champions” (Henrichs 15), implying that the statue might be of that of an Olympic athlete instead of a warrior. The statue is poised for action but still relaxed, trying to represent physical perfection. This potential energy presented is typical of Greek Classical Period art. The Riace shows that the Greeks valued athleticism and had a warrior culture. They admired men that possessed strong physical qualities and took care of their bodies.…

This sculpture was discovered off the coast of Cape Artemision at an ancient shipwreck. This piece is now being held at National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece. This piece belongs in the classical time period because you can see the focus is on the anatomy of the body not particularly how the body looked when it moved. Also, Zeus does not have much emotion on his face, which is another characteristic of classical art. Not only does Zeus have a stoic smile but he also possesses other qualities that make him a classical piece of work. His body is proportioned perfectly and he is aligned in a natural stance, which makes him look life like. It is very interesting to see how the Greeks knew the human body well enough to be able to sculpt the perfect proportions on a medium like marble or bronze. The Atemision Zeus is made out of Bronze, which was one of the preferred methods to sculpting because bronze was fairly easy to mold. The height of this Zeus sculpture is 6’10” and that again demonstrates how these sculptures were made to look very grand and…

In Rhetoric, Aristotle says that humor “arises when it is unexpected”. Classical Greek Art is one context in which humor is certainly unexpected. By reputation, it is taken quite seriously, and has permanently been held to the highest esteem for over two millennia. Not only has it been revered since its time, but it has also inspired some of the most well regarded works of the centuries to follow. Much of Ancient Rome’s most celebrated works were inspired by Greek creations. As well, many of the brilliant masterpieces of the Renaissance were accredited to their creators’ finding inspiration in the art of the ancient world. Seen as a highpoint of culture and innovation, the art produced in Greece between the 9th and 1st century BC is treasured…
