The story of Joseph
The story of Joseph, the Pharaoh, and the famine relates closely to project management and the skills necessary to lead a company sufficiently. The Bible explains how the Pharaoh dreams of the ears of grain and cattle for his people, and how Joseph interprets the dream to mean seven years of fortune and seven years of famine for the people of Egypt. In order to prepare for the famine that the Lord is bringing, Joseph creates a system that stores the grain for future utilization. To me, this proves that Joseph was given a leadership position in Egypt because he truly possessed the skills necessary to do right for his people. Leaders must not only courageous they must be smart, tenacious, and aware of the needs of others. Joseph understood the needs of his people and used his tactical skills to save lives, promote profit, and utilize the gifts given to him by the Lord. Setting and reaching one’s goals are a primary concern in many management settings. It’s also a good team building strategy to set a goal that the team can work towards together, celebrating in its completion or sharing in its defeat. Joseph set a goal to save enough corn and grain to be able to feed his country when the famine hit. While forming the goal I’m sure that Joseph was unaware that he would later become the ruler of Egypt. He simply did what he needed to do day to day and was later rewarded for his efforts. Scheduling and deadlines are a combined effort in my opinion. There are no deadlines without a time schedule. Both of these things are important to project managers because people need motivation and fortitude when working on a job. By placing a deadline employees know the standard they have been called to meet, and understand that there could be certain consequences by not completing the task on schedule. Scheduling can also go hand in hand with setting priorities. If one project has a deadline that is sooner than another, then obviously project number one should take priority.
