The sky was ablaze but this was a different kind of fire. A warm fire, one that enveloped me and gave hope that we would no longer be afraid and no longer be scared. We stepped out of the shade of the barn and climbed over the ridge. We could all see one thing, men in dull gray uniforms running out of the city. Towards the south a sea of blue and green push forward flooding the city washing it clean of the gray that had covered everything.
Just a few days before, beads of sweat formed on my head as I talked and lectured for minutes which turned into hours. The day was stressful, the kids as usual were constantly complaining of the summer

A man in a dull gray uniform stained crimson red as he lay dead still clutching the silver rod sticking through his chest. The streets nearest the border were a sea of gray and red but as you got closer to the inner city the gray and red seas turned into a red sea filled with the bodies of men, women, and children alike. The children let out muffled cries as they recognized the marked faces of those close to them and I too let out a muffled cry when I saw the families of the kids I saved. Not everyone was dead, many of the wealth are still living being held captive somewhere in the city. I hear a muffled shout and the pounding of boots and I knew we were discovered. I quickly grabbed the children and rushed quickly outside of the city carefully weaving between alleys as to not give away our hiding spot. On the way back I peak into a massive house the largest in the city its was Jia’s house I saw her family huddled in a corner as many of the soldiers around them quickly scurried around looking for items and anything they can take. My eyes quickly darted away as a figure clad in gray came out of the house in front dragging a man who seemed to be unconscious but still alive. The rising and falling of his chest was inconsistent and he was gasping for air. His arms were covered in purple and black spots and his face was caked with blood and sweat. From around the corner I watched as he was dragged up towards the mountain. I hoped he wouldn’t go near the barn but I knew that just over that ridge was a group of kids dependent on me and I had to get back to

In a few seconds, they found the reason for the deathly silence of an otherwise active and busy household. There were corpses lying everywhere. It was a truly horrifying sight. The sight and smell was too gory and wretched to…

Question number 11 asks me if the book Heat has helped me in any way. This book has helped me in a way because it taught me a lesson. Heat showed me that even though a situation may seem impossible for you to overcome, but if you keep your head up anything is possible. Michael Arroyo, a 12-year-old pitching phenom from Cuba, is an illegal immigrant as well as an orphan living with his brother. If the Social Services heard of the situation, Michael and his brother, Carlos, will be separated and maybe even sent back to Cuba. Nobody knew that Michael was an orphan. His father died of a heart attack a few months before Michael started becoming a rising star. If authorities found out about the death of his father, Michael and his brother would be sent back to Cuba, where his hopes of becoming a professional baseball player would most likely vanish. Even though Michael was always under the radar of powerful authorities, it didn’t stop him from pursuing his dream of becoming a player in the MLB. He continued to work hard and at the end of the story, Yankee’s star pitcher and Michael’s idol, El Grande, locates a copy of his birth certificate, which makes him eligible to compete in games. This story taught me that if Michael can keep his head up through his father’s death and always living under the fact that at any given day he could be sent back to Cuba, I should be able to keep my head held high through any situation as well.…

On the other hand, there is the young boy. Growing up in post-WW2 Europe, all he has ever known is destruction. It is evident that the young boy admires soldiers very much, and has studied them very intensely: “ ‘Black and red is the engineers… Plain black is the military police…’ ”(97). He is excited by the sudden intrusion of soldiers into his underground world (94). This is typical of boys his age, and is a contrast from the more peaceful views of his elderly guardian. The young boy has spent his whole life in the catacombs of a war-torn city. When he is exposed to surroundings that are different from this, he becomes uneasy.…

The tone of something merely depends on the type of audience you are addressing. I wrote two letters to two people explaining whether or not I would donate my body to science after reading the book Stiff written by Mary Roach, that went into depth about cadavers. My first letter, Letter 1, was directed towards the author herself, Mary Roach, someone who I have never met or know. Naturally, my tone towards her would be formal and respectful. My other letter, Letter 2, was written to my best friend, April, who I am extremely comfortable so the tone would be more laid back.…

Wildland fires were approaching our way. So, we jumped in our vehicles and tried to make our way out to the main road. It was tough because the smoke and haze was so very thick. "Summer" by David Updike

David Updike’s story “Summer” describes one summer holiday of a boy named Homer. He is faced with the external conflict on an unrequited love. Homer, the protagonist, is spending the summer at his best friend, Fred’s home near the lake. The summer, for the most, followed the usual flow of ‘athletic and boyhood fulfillment” (para 11) for Homer and Fred. There were the tennis matches and hiking, the alcohol and hanging out late at night and the reckless driving of both the car and the motorboat out on the lake. However, what made this summer special to Homer was that he had fallen in love with Fred’s sister, Sandra, the antagonist. Sadly, though, she did not seem to really notice him despite all the times they spent together, and so he suffered the heartache of regret and longing as he faced his conflict of an “unrequited” love.…

The glistening, white snow fell slowly to the ground outside the window. The distinct shapes of the snowflakes shown; the light from the street lamp seeping through the cracks. The mumble of the heater in the corner of the room; the faint sound of the blood dripping onto the floor were the only sounds. He lay there; motionless. The thuds were entering the silent room once again. The creaking of the wooden floor grew louder and louder. Still the light of the street lamp shone through the window and onto the far wall. The nasty figure walked into the murky room. Only its shadow appeared on the far wall behind it. The boy in the bed was Eli. His tiny eight year old body was red with his own blood. Then……
