The polytheistic religious community was an essential part of everyday life in the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Source E displays the tomb of the Flavii in Pompeii, which presents an insight into the religious customs and burial practices. As a result, Source E depicts a very distinctive purpose for the importance of religion by preserving the inhabitants, as it was their belief that the soul of the dead had to be properly buried. Furthermore, a prominent feature of religion is evident in the houses of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The house depicted a lararium with small statues or painted images of the lares often as 2 young men dancing and the genius who was the guardian of spirits The household gods were worshipped by the paterfamilias…

She produced major works of religious literature including visionary tracts, essays on natural science and medicine, liturgical dramas, and songs for devotional performance (The State College of Florida). The twelfth century Catholic Church recognized the divine source of Hildegard’s prophecies, and authorized her to organize events of public ministry outside the walls of her cloisters. During a time when the ideas of few women were acknowledged, her teachings reinforced the religious practice of the Christian faith, and inspired the works of other leading mystics of the middle ages (Benedict…

Cybele was the mother goddess during the Roman Republic dating back to the 204BC era. Within this religion there are many parallels and contrast to other religious cults of the same era. The Great Mother also known as Cybele, was one of chaste perfection and ominous powers. As critical as this religion was for the people of Roman, there was another that would surpass its great hold over the people. Christianity and the cult of Cybele are two religions that would have their hold over the Romans, but with vast numbers and a charitable God only one could withstand time.…

    Temple of Athena Nike

    • 1255 Words

Greek Architecture is the most important and influential in Western history reaching a peak between 400 and 300 BC. Some examples of Ancient Greek architecture and sculptures were built primarily for religious purposes, to represent deities or to serve as temples, such as the Acropolis, the Parthenon, Erechtheum, Apollo Didyma, and the Temple of Athena Nike. The decision to build Athena Nike was an expression of Athens' ambitions to defeat Sparta and become a world power. The ancient Greek goddess Nike was the personification of the ideal of victory. One of the most common epithets for the goddess was Athena Nike. A temple to Athena was built on the Acropolis of Athens, Acropolis meaning “The Sacred Rock, the high city” (Ancient Greece). Bronze akroteria (added decoration) on the corners and central ridge of the temple roof represented Nike, and the temple itself was surrounded by a balustrade decorated with a frieze. Early in the Temple’s (Athena Nike) history, it was a place of worship for deities associated with wars, perhaps Bronze Age “Nike” gods or goddesses, which with time fused with the cult of Athena Nike of later centuries, but little is known about the history, nature or functions of the Athena Nike cult. The temple is smaller than the other temples of the Acropolis. This “5th-century Temple of Athena Nike, dedicated to Athena the Victor, stands on a projecting bastion originally a part of the Mycenaean fortifications, to the south of the Propylaia” (Freeman 2006, 73). This bastion, which was known as a pyrgos (tower), dates back to at least the Bronze Age. In Greek myth “It is from this elevated spot that Theseus’ father Aegeus is said to have kept watch for the return of his son from Crete. Theseus had promised to hoist a white sail if his ship was bringing him home alive. He forgot to do so, and seeing the black sail approach and believing his son to have been devoured by the Minotaur, Aegeus hurled himself…

What religious role has the Pantheon played in Roman History? Well, the Pantheon has played a religious role of a temple to worship gods and it has always been a type of propaganda for Roman Religions, such as Ancient Roman Religion and to Catholicism. The word pantheon comes from the Latin word pántheios which means of all gods (pan- PAN- + the(ós) god + -ios adj. Suffix). The Pantheon, had four different religious stages, first there was an "Ancient" stage, which was when the Pantheon was there to worship gods and goddesses of the Ancient Roman Religion; then there was a "Medieval" stage, which was when it became a Christian Church; also, it became a tomb, for those painters who painted pictures in the ceilings and walls of the Pantheon, through the "Renaissance" stage; and finally, there is a "Modern" stage which is represented "today", the Pantheon is used to bury those kings and queens of passed years and it is still used celebrate masses and weddings. At one point, Peter Conolly and Dodge Hazel state, "…the Pantheon is the best-preserved of all Roman buildings. It has been in continuous use throughout its history and it has represented religion in all times" (The Ancient City: Life in Classical Athens & Rome, 228). This makes reference to all those stages, the Pantheon went through and how the Pantheon has gone through them well-preserved, becoming one of the greatest images of Christianity in the world. According to historians Janson, H. W. and Anthony F. Janson in their book, History of Art, "As its name suggests, the Pantheon was dedicated to "all the gods" or, more precisely to seven planetary gods…" and "…and then became a great Christian building to worship just one god" (224). This also refers to, the way the Pantheon has changed its roots, as it started as a seven god building and finished as a one god building (Jesus Christ).…
