The Significant of Objects
“The Things They Carried” By Tim O’Brien was a short story based during the Vietnam war that was hard on a soldier named Jimmy Cross and his platoon called alpha company , This story is about the physical objects they carried that had emotion and significant meanings. O’Brien uses physical objects that the soldiers to show the emotion burdens that resulted from being in and at the war. Soldiers carry items to remind other times and places other than there currently situation.
The Speaker, describes everything the men in the company carried and why all the importance of possessions. They are described as actual physical objects chewing gum, marijuana, and mosquito repellent and chewing gum. The objects the men carried depended on many different factors, some possessed objects based from there constitutions and others on their priorities. Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried several objects such as letters in ruck sack and a pebble in his mouth. Henry Dobbins the machine gunner is a big guy and he carried extra rations and also had his girlfriend panty hose tied around his neck. Ted Lavender carries marijuana and tranquilizers. One man named Kiowa carried a bible of the New Testament which was a gift from his father
Jimmy cross Carried his items to remind him of his love for Martha, a girl from his college in New Jersey who has not yet said she loved him. Henry dobbins carried his objects because of superstitions of going hungry and the panty hose to remind him of his girlfriend. Ted Lavender carried the drugs because he was so nervous and it helped to calm him down. Kiowa carried the bible because it was gift from his father.
The objects the men carried changed by their rank or specialty. The men carried all sorts of thing, low-ranking soldiers carried several magazines of ammunition and standard M-16 assault rifle. Some carried grenade launchers but all
