The first battle that Beowulf came in contact with happened to be against Grendel. Grendel, a descendant of Cain, consequently gets banished by God and lived in a dark and cold cave. He had overheard the people in Heorot when they had a celebration about their military success. Grendel initiated the attack because of human emotions and jealousy. Beowulf had been motivated to engage with Grendel's attack because he wanted to test himself and see how well Grendel could fight. Beowulf had aged and he didn’t have any motivation to battle with anyone. This instance seemed different to him because the dragon had recently scorched the earth and anything in his way. A peasant had tried to make some money and stole some treasure from the dragons stash. The dragon raged with anger about the stolen treasure and sought out to find the stolen treasure no matter what the circumstances. The dragon burned down cities and kingdoms and eventually made it’s way to Beowulf’s castle and torched that to the ground. Beowulf prepared for the battle by finding out where the dragon’s home is located and Beowulf gathered a group of eleven willing to fight men. The battle ended with Beowulf and the dragon dying. Beowulf’s eleven ‘willing’ men fled except for one, Wiglaf. Wiglaf ended up becoming the leader of the Geats as commanded by
