The Time After Civil War Reconstruction: The Period Of Reconstruction
The time after the Civil War was known as the period of Reconstruction which lead to many changes in how the U.S. functioned. When slavery was abolished the now free African Americans had their freedom there was many repercussions in economic, political, and social areas within the country. For instance, African Americans were able to work in order to provide for themselves, black men earned the right to vote, and the government worked to help African Americans become self reliant. These changes continued into modern day as they were important points in U.S. History. One of the most noticeable changes was the 14th amendments addition of African American men in the voting process, allowing their voices be heard by the government. This goal was discussed in the 7th document as at the time African Americans didn't have any voice in the politics of America and people were calling for this to change. However, some people opposed this and created a literacy test in order to prevent African Americans from expressing their right to vote. This was created b/c many freed African Americans didn't have the ability to read or write, which was used against them by people who didn't view them as equals. To combat this, various organizations would protest for better treatment with one such protest being shown in document 8. These protests would soon become a major turning point in the civil rights movement of the 1960s, especially with one of the most well known activist being Martin Luther king Jr. In conclusion the reconstruction era in America had made many impacts in the different aspects of society. The economic structure of Southern states greatly changed, now with African Americans working as equals instead of being the main source of labor. Soon after this, African American men gained the ability to vote granting access to the political stage of America and get the chance to improve life for themselves. Of course, the clearest change
