In The True Story of Hansel and Gretel the goal for all the character’s is to ensure the safety of themselves and the people around them typically being “family” members. This is shown many times throughout the book such as the time when Magda was fighting of Gretel’s grippe or when Magda showed Hansel the secret hidey spot. In the book we also see the caring relationship of Hansel and Gretel from the both of them. This caring relationship is very evident when Hansel stopped caring about living. At one point, Hansel gives up on life and he walked towards gunfire hoping to die, Gretel was able to snap out of her insanity and go save Hansel. “Hansel didn’t care anymore. He stopped screaming and began to walk toward the men with the guns. He had just woken up, but he was so tired that he knew he was probably dead. Something in her mind gave way and the memories came in like a wall of water, all at once, the thoughts filling every empty place in her head. She remembered” (281 - 282).
