To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a timeless classic, about a young girl who narrates her life in Maycomb County, and the hardships that are in it. However, it is also about family, and her father, Atticus. Atticus is the father of Jem and Scout, and from the very beginning we see that they love him. He is not very prominent in the first act, but he’s still an important character. He is a great role model for the kids, although he has lost his wife and he has to raise the kids alone during the Great Depression, he stays strong. Atticus is extremely intelligent, and, no matter the circumstances, he cares greatly for his children. Now to elaborate more on how his kids love him. Atticus Finch is a father beloved by his children. This fact is clearly shown throughout the book as Jem and Scout wait by the post office for Atticus and only want his upmost approval. Not only that, but they care for his well-being, like when they followed him to the jail house the night before the court trial, and how they stepped in to save him. This really displays the bond between the father and his children.
However; he is not only intelligent in the sense of smart thinking. . “Lawyers, I suppose, were children once.”(Charles lamb, epigraph) This quote shows that Atticus knows what it is like to be a child, he knows what his kids are going through to some extent and his knowledge on the matter is very important to the book. He is not only intelligent with the kids, but with the knowledge of Macomb. His family is one of the oldest in the county, and he knows everyone in the small town by name, knowing their class, struggles, and difficulties in life. If Atticus did not have this kind of knowledge in the book, I doubt he would be as much of a noteworthy character as he is now. Atticus knows about his kids, but he also cares for them
