The Very Hungry Caterpillar By Eric Carle
6. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is one of those classic children’s books written and illustrated by Eric Carle. It was published by the World Publishing Company in 1969. This super cute book features a very hungry caterpillar who eats through a wide variety of foods before emerging as a beautiful butterfly. This is a short and simple story that is full of learning opportunities for small children such as the days of the week, counting, and even metamorphosis. The colorful illustrations engage even the youngest readers. I noticed that Carle used the collage technique in his illustrations, and each page has a hole in it where the caterpillar had eaten his way through. Each drawing is large, simple, bold and colorful. This book makes learning about …show more content…
The Ugly Duckling was written by Hans Christian Andersen and the original was published in 1843. This story tells the tale of an unattractive little bird who is born in a barnyard and suffers verbal and physical abuse from others around him, until he matures into a beautiful swan the most beautiful bird of them all. This is a classic tale that has been told and retold over and over again. One of the main themes in this story is about appearances. Andersen tries to teach the readers that they should not pay too much attention towards appearances, because vanity is not something someone should have. One important lesson in this book is that the ugly duckling stays beautiful inside even after being bullied. A lot of children can feel compassion for the poor little duckling that is mistreated, hopefully teaching them that teasing people is wrong. This story definitely can fit into society today. Hopefully by reading this story children will realize that being different is not necessarily a bad thing. The very few illustrations in the book are different from children’s books written now days. They are in black and white, they look like they were drawn by pencil. This story of the ugly duckling was another one of my favorite stories growing up and even to this day. I think people of all ages can relate to this story, because of how prevalent bullying is in schools and on the internet

A Child Called “It” by David Pelzer is his own autobiography of his life as a child being abused by his alcoholic mother, Catherine Roerva Pelzer, who isolates him from the family, then abuses him, and nearly killed him through starvation, poisoning, and once stabbing him. Since Mother starved him for days, he began to steal food in order to survive, and when she finds out he has stolen food, she abuses him with her own “games”. Dave reflects on the “good times” in his childhood, because Mother was once a wonderful, loving mom, but the drinking habit, illness, and Father being gone took over her life, leaving both emotional and physical scars on her child which will haunt him for life. His father, Stephen Joseph Pelzer, a fireman in San Francisco, is a frightened man who as watches Dave is beaten, starved, and humiliated. Mother has stopped calling him by name; instead she would refer him as “the boy” to “it”. He was starved for 10 consecutive days, stabbed, forced to eat his brother’s diaper and a spoonful of ammonia, burned over a gas stove, stayed in the bathroom with ammonia resulting in a near fatal outcome, smashed his face into the mirror while screaming "I'm a bad boy", lying in the bathtub naked with freezing water for hours.…

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a classic piece of literary fiction first published in 1962. Its controversial author, Ken Kesey, served as an experimental subject and aide in a hospital, an experience which particularly inspired the novel’s creation. Though he was born in La Junta, Colorado in 1935, Kesey moved to Palo Alto, California after a scholarship to a graduate writing program at Stanford University. It was here at Stanford that he volunteered for a U.S. Army experiment in which he was given mind-altering drugs to report on their effects, as well as served as an attendant in a psychiatric ward. Much like his books, some of which are banned in select schools, Kesey’s behavior was highly contentious, as he was a major proponent of psychedelic drug usage, a position that landed him in jail after being charged with drug possession, faking his own death, and fleeing the country.…

Patricia Cornwell, a famous writer, once said, that “I believe the root of all evil is the abuse of power”. To receive power in one’s life, they bring out strong emotions, such as fear or guilt to persuade the person to obey their commands. But, these people are simply exercising their power, and only have a relationship with them asymmetrically. The person will authority has the ability to limit the choices of another, and uses physically or psychologically pain only to pursue their goal. A person can rightfully deserve power, or obtain power by acting savagely. Either way, having authority in society can force people to act inhuman, and make people suffer dramatically. Similarly, in the article “Simulated prison in ‘71 Showed a Fine Line…

Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, is a perfect example of how kids would act when placed on an uninhabited island with no guidance or rule. The views the children once had were beginning to be dramatically affected by their surroundings. In Chapter one “The children gave him the same obedience that they have given to the men with megaphones” (Golding 18). All of their previously known comforts and security’s are now being molded by the environment around them. Many things can change when the luxuries of living are taken away.…

The book, The Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding shows Golding’s dark past in his dark tale of Schoolboys who crash land on a deserted island in WWII. He uses Sigmund Freud’s theory of personality to show his interpretation of what their reactions to many events would be. Freud “argued that personality is formed through conflicts among three fundamental structures of the human mind: the id, ego, and superego.” (#6) These three fundamental structures are best shown in the three characters Piggy, Ralph, and Jack.…

    The Ugly Duckling

Hans Christian Andersen lived a childhood of poverty and neglect, raised in the father's shoe shop. Like the ugly duckling the writer also suffered family homelessness when he was a child, if we really look at his life we can realize that there are many similarities between the two stories, so maybe he wanted to leave his own life reflected in his stories. Like the Ugly Duckling, born in a humble duck-yard yet destined to become a swan, Andersen was born the son of a poor cobbler in the city of Odense, where the family shared a single room and lived a hand-to-mouth existence. There was always food, but never quite enough; there were books on the shelf, but no money for grammar school. Also Andersen was known to not have much luck with the ladies, and the sad tones to many of his stories are probably the result of his real life heartaches.…
