2. Rationale: For the past week, the students have been learning about different shapes (Triangles, Rectangles, Squares, and Circles) and the basic concept of what patterns are. Since the students are familiar with the basic shapes, we will be using these shapes and to have the student create their own individual pattern caterpillar based on the book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle.
3. Concept:
• Four basic shapes are triangles, rectangles, squares, and circles.
• Patterns are consistent and recurring characteristic or traits. (“something that is repeated over and over again.”)
• Patterns and shapes are seen around us in our daily environment.

Introduction: Every morning when we have school there is a routine that is followed for the whole class. When we use the bathroom, then we wash our _____? (hands), used the bathroom again and we wash our ____ (hands again). After we are done eating breakfast, we wash ours hand and _____ (brush our teeth), we do the same thing after lunch and dinner. This morning we were working on a new pattern during circle time. Raising your hand, who can tell us what that pattern was?
c. Activity: Pattern Caterpillar
• Using multi-colored construction paper, cutout triangles, rectangles, squares, and circles.
• Place all cutout shapes on the table.
• Have each student take the cutout shapes and create their own pattern.
• After they create their own pattern have them glue the shapes together to look like a caterpillar.
• Place pipe cleaners, crayons, scotch tape, wiggly eyes, and markers on the table.
• Allow the children to decorate their caterpillar.
8. Closure: Discuss with the class how patterns could be helpful. For example, they can give us clues as to what will come next and review the basic shapes. Followed by have the students display their pattern/shape caterpillar they made to their peers.
