The weaker sex

Living in this community, gender has a very strong effect on each and every one of us, throughout our life, Gender tells who we might be, but gender doesn’t define who we are. Gender doesn’t define who I am, I might be girl, a women, and a female,but before I’m a girl, I’m the child of my parents, before I’m a girl, I am who I am, my body does not own me. Woman is the companion of man, gifted with equal mental capacities. She has the right to participate in very minutest detail in the activities of man and she has an equal right of freedom and liberty with him. A lot of things a girl or a woman can do; a guy or a man can never do and vice versa also, so we are more or less given equal ‘superpowers’ by nature eventhough it gave us distinct physical forms.
But having said that, it would be a bit unrealistic of me to say that I live in a perfectly equal society, regardless of the fact that our country is headed by a man, who is headed by a woman.
Except for the positive effects of modernisation which bought about some kind of progressiveness among our society, our country still faces a major problem in treating women, let alone “empowering” them. There are still daughters who are blatantly denied of their basic right to education. There are still wives who are confined to the kitchens by choice… i.e. choice of their in-laws families.
Locked by chains of blind traditions and archaic nonsense. Where is the freedom?
Gandhiji said “Our nation will have achieved true freedom when a woman can walk alone in the streets at midnight.”
Well, a girl in Delhi came close to doing that, and we all know what happened after.
It is not about having stricter laws, stringent punishments or putting up more cops on streets. In fact, it is about having no cops on the streets.
The problem lies with how we look at women. Our attitudes towards them. Now, the solution. You might now think that we must look up towards the well-developed western countries that, on paper, have the least level of Gender Gap.
Actually, the answer lies within ourselves, our scriptures and wonderful ancestors who not only gave equal importance towards woman but placed them in the highest pedestal. In primitive societies it was believed that a woman is divine, not human beings, endowed with the most important power in the world-giving birth.
Guys and girls take note “To call woman the weaker sex is a libel; it is man's injustice to woman. If by strength is meant brute strength, then, indeed, is woman less brute than man. If by strength is meant moral power, then woman is immeasurably man's superior. Has she not got greater intuition, is she not more self-sacrificing, has she not got greater powers of endurance, has she not got greater courage? Without her, man could not be. If nonviolence is the law of our being, the future is with woman. Who can make a more effective appeal to the heart than woman?”
Wait. These words, though uttered by me now, are actually first told by whom we were all taught as the “Father of the nation”. So, guys, stop calling them ‘that’. And girls, stop believing in ‘that’
