The Wonder Of Sonder By Hollins University
The Wonder of Sonder

"Sonder", my best friend always whispers to me on bad days, "remember what that means." Early on in my high school experience, I decided that this simple little word was to be my lifelong philosophy. Oddly enough, the term "sonder" can't be found on any page of any dictionary in any library in the world. Rather, it is an obscure word referring to the human realization that each and every person you encounter or pass by in your lifetime lives a life as complex and riddled with challenges as your own. In my eyes, Hollins University, along with its students and professors, recognizes this universal meaning of "sonder". Ultimately, Hollins understands that each person is in the process of writing his or her own autobiography,

“Son? What son?” In todays decade there is surprisingly a substantial amount of individuals having children without even realizing it. Although optimism and rationalism are essential idealisms in todays’ world, families were indeed much more united in the past, rather than how they are today. In the 50’s for instance, some say families tended to spend more time together. In the article “What we really miss about the 50’s” author Stephanie Coonts explained how times have changed. “Many families found it possible to put together a good imitation of a way of living, in the 1950s’ and the 1960’s. Couples were often able to construct marriages that were much more harmonious, than…

It’s in our sick and dying bed that we are sadly given no other task but to evaluate all our years of living. The body no longer full of vigor nor fight, the heart heavy form sorrows past; the footsteps of death nocking at the door serve as an earnest call to evaluate and make peace with all we did in life. Suddenly, its time to review the many chronicles that compose our life story. As I look back on my life I am overwhelmed with grief. I grieve not for missed opportunities, God knows I seized every opportune moment. I grieve for the misjudgment of my ambitious endeavors, which will be forever erroneously highlighted and remain an eternal blemish upon my legacy.…

Throughout life, people are always seeking something, whether it is discovering solutions to satisfy desires or seeking the purpose of life. However, the recognition and fulfillment of one's true self-are the hardest things in the world simply because one always seems certain of him or herself, and is strongly influenced by his or her surroundings. In his essay, “The Power of Context,” Malcolm Gladwell says that human behavior is susceptible to and strongly predisposed by the environment in which they live. He further poses that, "epidemics are sensitive to the surroundings and situation of the places and times in which they transpire." The essay extensively states that the features of one’s current social and physical…

One’s events depends on the surrounding he or she is in Whether positive or negative, people remember major occurrences in their life which can shape who they are. There is only so much one can change about one’s self. To many, life encounters have become both good and bad scars. This behavior can change one’s perspective on life, but cannot change one’s experiences. These scars that people educe are mentally and emotionally embodied into who they are. Though people try to hide the scars they posses, they will always have something, such as their parents, that will constantly reinforce those lessons that they have endured. One can change anything about themselves, besides their authentic…

Everybody’s got their own experiences; everybody’s got their own story. In a poem entitled “Mother to Son” and a short story entitled “Thank you Ma’am “ which is both by Langston Hughes, it it illustrated to the readers that a person’s past can greatly influence the person’s future. The experiences in the past of both Mrs. Jones and the speaker in the poem had given to them that all-too-important insight and allowed them to share the knowledge to the young people.…

Eakin believes the consequences to breaking this rule are the most severe (119), although is also one of the most intertwined to the idea of identity (119). Eakin references the scientific studies of Oliver Sacks and Daniel L. Schacter (120) in order to look at case studies of people are considered to “fail to display normalcy” (120) due to chronic memory loss. Utilizing this scientific research Eakin poses a larger question on personhood, on how, from early ages, human memories form who we are (120). He interprets the research to convey the need for memories and narrative in order to have human connection (Eakin 121). Eakin finally arrives at the idea that “autobiography is… a discourse of identity” (124), affirming to the readers that the article proves that they must imagine the idea of literature more complexly…

Radford’s puzzle is, that we feel pity (have feelings in general) towards fictional characters although we should not because they are not real. Radford presents us with the case of a man approaching us with a tragic story about his sister and while we feel pity for her he confesses that he has no sister. Once we hear this we no longer feel pity for the sister. This case seems to show that we do not feel emotions when we do not think that something has truly happen or the character is not real. Radford's puzzle focuses on the idea that our emotions could be directed towards fictional characters. While, Walton would make the distinction that our emotional engagement from fiction only results in quisai emotion. Both puzzles, still entail emotional responses from fiction, but Radford sees the…

I started off trying to remember what it was like being face to face with the ‘angriest man in the world’ for five hours a week, slowly spilling my thoughts and memories on paper, editing, revising and changing things more times than I can remember. Sometimes tossing out entire paragraphs and then later regretting it. The more I wrote, the more I remembered how his ‘teachings’ didn’t work and how I was glad to finally be out of seventh grade on the last day of school.…

I think the younger you are, the more dramatically different you are from each year to the next. Infancy through young adulthood holds so many milestones and life-changing events. Those are the years when you can really tell how a person has changed since the year before. I think the difference between age 1 and 2, 12 and 13, 19 and 20, etc, is so much greater than 34 and 35, 46 and 47, 80 and 81, etc. For me, the past 5 years have been from ages 37 to 42. If you had asked me what the meaning of life was at a younger age, I probably could not have told you. I still can not probably tell you the answer to that question. Can anyone truly answer that question? Everyone has a different meaning to life that is their very own. As a teenage, like most teenagers, I thought I knew it all and had control of my life and it's direction, and found out I was wrong. I had made some mistakes on my life journey but I had learned from them. I became a mother at the young age of 18 which put my life in a whole new direction. Did I lose my youth? Yes. Would I have changed it? No. I ended up having three children by the time I was 23. That was the time when I thought my life had true meaning. I had three little human beings that depended on me for everything. Did I make mistakes along the way? Yes, what young mother doesn't? As they grew, I grew with them. At the age of 32 I went down the wrong path of life for awhile and ended up in prison over drugs. I had never in a million years thought that I would end up there. I guess after losing both of my parents with in a year and a half in my late 20's, that put me over the edge. I got involved with the wrong people and started down a path of destruction. After losing everything, including my freedom, it was time to make a change. I now sit here 10 years later and look back…

Bigger Thomas, I believe, is neither the protagonist nor antagonist of Native Son. Richard Wright uses Bigger to show how the mindsets of blacks were psychologically altered due to racism in the 1930’s. Bigger’s life was lived in constant anger and fear towards the whites who were always portrayed as better and superior forcing him and the rest of the black community to live in poverty, segregated from the white community. Another emotion he also felt was power in a twisted way when he murdered Mary, the feeling that he had power to exert over the whites since he was able to murder one. He struggled with getting his true feelings out and is helped by his lawyer Max. Max tried to show the people that Bigger is not the only one who is like this and that continual racism resulted into the horrid death of Mary Dalton which can only be prevented in future cases if America realizes what racism could do to the psychological being of a human being.…

Elsa Morante novel, History: A Novel, follows the life of a half-Jewish school teacher named Ida Mancuso, along with her two sons Nino and Giuseppe. The novel is staged to show events that happened chronologically starting with World War II all the way to the year of 1947. As each character is revealed, the narrator shares a sense of what each character is like. Each of their personalities show how they depict life and ultimately history through time. Sarah Carey’s essay, Elsa Morante Envisioning History, gives a great insight as to how Elsa Morante shows how each of the main characters depicts history through photographs. The way someone views certain events can be viewed to them in a similar way as a previous event that had happened in their…

As we grow we feel various amounts of emotion every day, and gain experience through the repetitive nature of every day life. Everything we do in life builds upon our experience, which in a sense is one’s individual story. Each story holds its own secrets, and moments of greatness, but regardless of value, they are individual experiences. Experiences shape a person, and without experience, there is a colorless being that lacks wisdom. This is another key to unlock a door to the path of enlightenment, because experience humbles a person, and causes him or her to let go of insecurities and bad…
