The theme of the story is “ The wonders of becoming a man “. Throughout the story the protagonist has a quest to become the next priest of the tribe, John is inspired to go on this journey by his number one mentor his dad. In his village, the east is prohibited which is the dead places. John goes on this quest and entreats the forbidden land where he believes he would die. Throughout his life John has been punished harder than the others by his father since his father knew he’s is the one who had more capability. One night John has a vision of the past. Even before John goes on his quest his father reminds him what not to do. In the text it states ”All these things are forbidden ”, I said , but it was my voice that spoke and not my spirit . He looked at me again”. John states that it was his voice but not his soul that means he only aggression because he knew that’s what his father wanted to hear but deep down he was denying what he actually wanted to do .
The reader has a hard time understanding where the story sets . The story talks about a tribe and a forbidden forest ,rivers you have to go thru and magic . It forces the reader to read closely and be able to find context clues in order to know the actual setting . Tone
In the story by the waters of Babylon the tone is very calm . When the readers read the story it feels like is being told by somebody with love and care which calms the reader. In the text it states ” it is forbidden to travel east. It is forbidden to cross the river. It is forbidden to go to the place of ten Gods all these things are forbidden ”. When the author of the story takes the time to mention forbidden places he's adding the magic fairy tale tone to the story
