Theatrical Tactics In The Medical Field
Being a doctor is much more than prescribing medicine. There must be a relationship established with the person’s life that is in your hands. In medical school, doctors learn thousands of techniques and diagnoses they need to become successful. They may learn a small amount of patient care skills, but they are still mainly focused on the problem, not the patient. Theater teaches many skills a doctors can use to improve their communication skills with the patient and even the techniques and treatment of a patient. Theatrical tactics can improve medical practices by enhancing medical student learning and patient experience.

When any patient receives medical care from a doctor, it is assumed that they expect good medical advice and treatment, but it's above and beyond expectations when a doctor cares about his/her patient’s well-being and gets on a personal level. It makes the patient feel cared for and important. Zimmer speaks about having to excel in socialization with your patient in order to excel in medicine at all. One can have all of the medical knowledge in the world, but if he/she doesn’t care about the patient, there's nothing irreplaceable about them. In the article she states, “You get to help doctors and students learn to communicate and express empathy. They might be brilliant on paper, but if they can't relate to the patient, they're going to be ineffective.” “The national exam started due to the fact that 85 percent of all malpractice suits in the U.S.A. are based upon a failure of doctor-patient communication. It's not that the doctor didn't know enough.... It's that he or she did not communicate well enough with his or her patient!" If a doctor is sued for malpractice caused by miscommunication, it can be well anticipated that his/her clientele will take a sharp decline in existing patients, and have little to no incoming patients. This is explained when Dr. Chaturvedi states in his Medical Theatre textbook, “Patients’ perceptions of the quality of the healthcare they received are highly dependent on the quality of their interactions with their healthcare clinician and team. There is a wealth of research data that supports the benefits of effective communication and health outcomes for patients and healthcare teams.     Many times an individual is embarrassed to revel symptoms or past medical history in fear they might be rejected or judged. The thought of another patient getting a glimpse of their medical chart is reason to withhold information or perhaps the medication prescribed makes them feel strange or sick? Because communication plays a vital role in effective collaboration, healthcare providers must address potential breakdowns so as to ensure productive dialogue and to create troubleshooting strategies. The College of Nurses of Ontario website states that communication is how nurses establish and maintain their therapeutic relationships by building trust, empathy and receptivity (CNO, 2006).
