Mark knocked and Scott greeted us at the door and invited us into his dwelling, so no authority was needed because consent was given. We shacked hands with Scott after he was done on the phone. As soon as Cathy entered the house, I tried to isolate Scott and ask more questions about the car and what was going. I used hand gestures and summarized what Scott told me to make sure he understood I was listening. It became obvious that all I knew was that they were fighting, so I let Scott and Cathy talk it out near the kitchen where I tried to precipitate the yelling as much as I could by stating, “Yelling is not helping this situation” in a calm voice. I used Scott’s name as much as I could to get his attention. When things became heated, I stepped in front of Scott in an attempt to block his view. I learned that I cannot get people’s attention, even when I am in their face and yelling their name.
