Ambrose Bierce was born on June 24, 1842. He was the tenth child out of thirteen, so his parents were somewhat poor. His father's name was Marcus Aurelius Bierce and his mother's name was Laura Bierce. Laura was a descendant of William Bradford. Many of Ambrose's family have a military background, which later encouraged him to enroll in the Kentucky Military institute. In 1846 when he was 4 years old, his family moved to Indiana. At the age of fifteen, he left home to be a “printer's devil”, which is an assistant for a local newspaper printer. The newspaper was called the “Northern Indianian,” in Warsaw, Indiana.
