Theodore first settled in New York with his newly wedded wife. He enrolled in Columbine University, attempting to pursue a higher degree in law. Theodore later dropped out to write a book entitled “The Naval War of 1812”. Eventually, he developed a passion for politics, and in 1881, was elected as a Republican to the “The New York Assembly”.
Three years later, on February 14th, 1884, Theodore would be devastated by a double tragedy, His mother, Martha Roosevelt died; alongside his wife Alice lee, who died while giving birth. This caused Theodore great pain, it was said that he would never speak about his deceased mother or wife, not even to his daughter, who survived this tragic incident. Roosevelt left New York for Montana where he started the now famous Elkhorn Ranch. For two years, he ran his ranch and continued to write. Theodore would soon be responsible for calling an attack on the Spanish fleet in the Philippines. Sadly, in May 1898 a humble Theodore resigned from his Navy position to personally volunteer to fight in Cuba. It was at this time that Theodore formed “The Rough Riders”, a group of elite (volunteer) fighters. The Roughriders fought fearlessly and thus Teddy became a national hero.
Roosevelt being a national hero displayed a great amount of uprightness in office, perturbing the party bosses who expected him to ignore the law in favor of partisan politics. Roosevelt did a great amount of campaigning for McKinley in 1900—one analyst asserted, "This Teddy alone that's running, a' he ain't a runnin', he's a gallopin'." Roosevelt endeavored, his efforts proofed to a success in helping ensure victory for
