God abhors sin and provides justice when we do not obey his commands. In the Old Testament God’s chosen people were far from perfect and their struggles are identified throughout scripture. Shortly after the exodus from Egypt, Israel turned away from God and did not put their trust in Him. As a result of this disobedience Numbers 32:13 says, “The Lord’s anger burned against Israel and he made them wander in the wilderness for 40 years…”(NIV, 2011). Scripture highlights several examples of the need for humanity to follow God and the catasphrofic results for failing to do so. In Everyday Theology the author states “Hell is the necessary doctrine of a God who is ultimately just” (2016, p.257). 2 Thessalonians 1: 8-9 states, “He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might” (NIV, 2011). Therefore, just as the Israelite were punished for their disobedience humanity suffers the same fate for eternity without the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ. Our God is a merciful God. Despite our sins and transgressions Jesus died upon the cross for our sins and showed the ultimate act of mercy and love for us. God’s mercy on the Israelites is evidenced throughout scripture beginning in the Old Testament. Deuteronomy 4: 31shares his merciful nature with us. “For the Lord your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your ancestors, which he confirmed to them by oath” (NIV, 2011). Futhermore, the author confirms his mercy in Psalms 106: 40-45
