The theoretical perspectives are reflected in the talk are the functionalism and conflict theory. According to the functionalism, social institutions help ensure social stability. In the talk Nazario talked about how he believed that institutions should rehabilitate a person so when they re-enter the society, they would do something positive. Nazario also talked about the roles of the C.O.s, how COs play a big factor in these adolescents’ lives, so the C.O.s need to properly handle these young people so when they go back to the society they would do something good for the society. The conflict theory was also mentioned in the talk, in this talk, Nazario told the story of a time when he was pushed and punched in his chest by the C.O. because the C.O. thought Nazario was violated his shift for getting into a physical altercation with another man while there was a female that was working. Despite getting pushed over and punched, Nazario did not react because if he did, it would get him in a big trouble. This is an example of the conflict theory, how the C.O.s have the power over the inmates so the C.O.s pretty much can do whatever they want.
