Crime Prevention through Environmental Design When Crimes are commited and we hear about them on the news, we often receive basic information on the crime including who, what, when, and where. We however never are given information as to why this may have happened. As both Police Departments and Researchers study the crime questions always arise as to what could be done to prevent it. One factor that is studied is the environment which the crime occurred in and how the environment or surroundings could be used to prevent it. This is called the theory of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design also referred to as CPTED.
Strategies
There are a total of six strategies that are used when discussing CPTED and they include natural surveillance, territorial reinforcement, natural access control and target hardening, activity support, and image/space management (Reynald, 2010). Each one represents a different idea as to how certain crimes can be prevented and how they individually impact the both the perpetrator of crime and their potential victim

This allows for limited access and creates any easy area to be monitored by all the bank employees. They then layer on the Target Hardening Strategy by having the majority of the money located inside a vault that has strict access controls and it is reinforced structurally to avoid being entered through any other means then its main entrance. They then place the vault behind the service desk areas and usually farthest away from all points of entry into and out of the building. Most criminals are aware of this and often time decide the effort to rob the bank is not worth the
