The aim of the term paper is for you to demonstrate your command of the material used in the course, including compulsory readings (i.e. readings assigned on syllabus from Smarter Crime Control, readings from the internet and websites) as well as slides discussed and discussions in class. You must explain how the criminological data were obtained and what is the knowledge in plain English and make the case for using them to reduce interpersonal crime, avoid escalation in police costs and reduce use of incarceration, particularly pre-trial detention.
It must use the following 8 subheadings for which the indicated grade % will be used:
10% - 1. the risk of crime and victimization to Canadians and its costs to taxpayers and to victims (use Canadian data from readings and slides discussed in class)
15% - 2. the causes (social risk factors) and proven ways to reduce youth involvement in interpersonal crime (chapter intro and 5 in SCC and slides discussed in class)
10% - 3. ways to improve the effectiveness of policing, including one strategy for police alone and one in partnership (such as to reduce gang violence involving young persons) (chapter 2 in SCC) and related materials)
10% - 4. measures to prevent violence against women, including one proven way in general and one promising way on campus (chapter 7 in SCC and discussions in class)
15% - 5. measures to reduce opportunity for crime, including one Canadian example, and one initiative to improve traffic safety (chapter 8-9 in SCC and slides discussed in class)
15% - 6. ways to meet the needs of victims, including one improvement to federal Bill of Rights (readings and materials discussed in class)
10% - 7. ways for cities to reduce crime (chapter 10 in SCC and related materials)
15% - 8. 3 key recommendations for a strategic vision to reduce crime, avoid escalation in
