Existentialism is about believing in life and fighting for life Existentialists make their own choices, they cannot control what happens but control the way they respond. Existentialism is about believing in life, a meaning in life, and fighting for it. Existentialists defines itself though the act of living, they act based on their beliefs and experiences. The, “Theory of Existentialism”, Mankind is the only known animal that defines itself through the act of living. They spend their lifetime changing their essence. They search for meaning in existentialism is searching for oneself. We are define by the way we act, because we are free in choice, we make our decisions based on experiences, beliefs, and biases, those choices make us unique. Existentialism is not dark, it is not depressing, is about life. Existentialist believe in living and in fighting for life. The novel, “October Sky”, by Homer Hickam, Jr. is a story about a young boy growing up in a coalmining town called Coalwood. This story takes place in the 1950s during the space race, the United States and Russians, and the oil substituting coal. In Coalwood, young man are expected to work in the mine like their fathers did. For Sonny everything changes when the first artificial satellite, made by the Russians, orbits the earth, Sonny is inspired to build and launch his own rockets, his goal is to go to space. Despite by the challenges, Sonny and with the help of his friends, are able to keep progressing in the rocket building. Sonny participates at the science fair, where Sonny and his friends earn scholarships to attend to college. Sonny success does not only come with the help of school but also with the help of the people of Coal wood. This story is filled with interesting ideas and life lessons. “The World Is Flat”, by Thomas L. Friedman, is a brief history of the twenty first century. This story is about how the world has become more globalized, more open to people
