Thermoregulatory Factors
A stimulus is a disruption to the internal environment resulting from changes in the external environment, in the case of a tramper climbing Mt Taranaki, changes in the temperature of the external environment can cause their core body temperature to rise or fall. As the tramper climbs up Mt Taranaki and gets higher in altitude the external temperature will likely become much colder and the external conditions will be icy and windy, therefore, the trampers core body temperature will begin to decrease. The cold external environment will cause a disruption to the trampers core body temperature. Components of the thermoregulatory control system, called receptors, detect this disruption and the changes to the trampers internal environment. The receptors, …show more content…
The control centre receives and processes messages from multiple receptors and uses this information to determine the appropriate response. The hypothalamus is the control centre in the brain responsible for thermoregulation, it process signals from thermoreceptors and then signals multiple effectors to initiate the appropriate response to restore the core body temperature to its set point of 37°C. The trampers hypothalamus will receive input from the thermoreceptors signally that there is a decrease in the external and internal temperature, and the hypothalamus will then activate the effectors to initiate a response. Effectors are components of the regulatory system that act to adjust the body’s internal environment and restore it to the set point. The effectors used in thermoregulation are components of the system that can adjust the body's core temperature back to equilibrium and back to the optimum range. As the tramper climbs Mount Taranaki and the external environmental conditions become increasingly colder, the trampers hypothalamus will send signals to the effectors to help the body generate heat in order to increase the trampers internal body

    In mammals a constant body temperature is maintained using the part of the brain called the hypothalamus, this detects information from thermoreceptors about the internal and external temperatures. The changes in the internal temperature is detected by thermoreceptors which are located in the hypothalamus and detect the temperature of the blood, while there are thermoreceptors which are located in the skin which detect any changes in the external temperature. The changes which are detected by the thermoreceptors are sent as impulses along sensory neurones to the hypothalamus where corrective measures can then be put in place by sending signals to effectors. Depending on whether temperature needs to be increased or decreased to return to normal levels depends on the mechanisms which are used to do this. For example to increase the body temperature vasoconstriction is one technique which the body uses, this involves the narrowing of blood vessels retaining the body temperature. Less sweating, hairs standing up right and shivering are also used to help increase the body temperature. To decrease the body temperature vasodilatation is used, it widens the blood vessels increasing the blood flow to the surface of the skin and therefore helping to reduce body temperature.
