Theseus And The Minotaur Literary Analysis
In the story Theseus and the Minotaur, the king of Crete had a minotaur son. The king put the minotaur into a Labyrinth, or a maze, underneath his palace. The king would take men from every city to be eaten by his son. Theseus was drafted to be eaten, but instead he killed the minotaur by telling the princess of crete that he loves her so she would help him get through the maze and kill the minotaur once and for all. After, the princess and Theseus ran away to an island where the princess thought they would be together, but Theseus left her on the island and sailed away. He used the princess to get a way out of the maze. To some people, Theseus was a hero. He bravely slayed a monster and fought for survival. Others would say that he was a bad
person for leaving the princess stranded on an island. Theseus said to the princess, “I never loved you, and now I am free to forget you” (3). They would say that what he did was not brave, it was cowardly. People can only see one side of the story. They choose sides based on what they think is right and wrong. But one can’t clearly define what is right and wrong because they only see a situation from point of view. What is wrong to one person might seem right to another. Theseus was praised when he got home. He was considered a warrior and a hero because of the society they were in. Killing demonic creatures was a sign of bravery and honor. They thought Theseus did the right thing. But to the god Dionysus, what Theseus did was wrong. He was a coward for using an innocent girl to get what he wants. Dionysus feels this way because he saw how upset the princess was when Theseus left her on the island. He sees the princesses side of the story. I personally think that what Theseus did was wrong. He used someone to get ahead. He did not even feel any remorse for what he did. The story says as Theseus was sailing away, “from the deck of the ship came the sound of laughter - cold, hard laughter” (2). Theseus was proud of what he did. When a person hurts others feelings intentionally, what that person did in my opinion, should be considered wrong.
