Texting While Driving is Dangerous
A split second is all it takes to send a text. A split second is all it takes to end a life. Most of us don’t think of the dangers that can occur when sending a text while driving. Imagine a sixteen year old teenager, driving on the roads; all of a sudden the teen receives a text from a friend. A split second later, an accident occurs; the teen that couldn’t wait to send a text has just slammed into the back of a semi-truck; this accident ends the life of a kid that had so much life left to live. The grieving family is left to wonder how this tragedy could have been prevented. The answer is not as easy as it seems: stop everyone from texting while driving. An accident occurring because of a person sending a text while driving is like shooting a gun, except the gun is a two ton gun in the form of a car.

Texting while driving is severely dangerous on the road while operating a vehicle. Texting while driving interrupts it cognitively as you think about the texting message instead of on the road. Technology is everywhere in our everyday lives, and at no other times is it more dangerous to be around than when you are behind the wheel of a vehicle. My editorial titled “Texting while driving? In a matter of seconds, you could ruin lives forever.” Was created by the Editorial Board of the Chicago Tribune. This editorial is focused on the argument that driving while texting can be extremely hazardous to a person’s life and those around them. “Close your eyes, and count five seconds. Open them. That's the average amount of time motorists take their eyes off the road while texting.” This statement speaks strongly to me in giving a better understanding to the issue described. The author does not openly try to persuade the audience to go with his will but talks about the consequences of doing it and the ramifications it comes with.…

Ever been stuck at a light behind somebody who is not paying attention because of their cell phone? It's annoying right. Well that might not be a problem anymore. Many states have banned the use of hand-held devices while driving. Knowing about all the people that have been killed in accidents involving cell phones, I one-hundred percent agree with this law. Using your cell phone while driving can lead to lack of focus on the road, especially among young drivers who are not as experienced as their adult counterparts. Driving takes an extreme amount of concentration, due to the many things that could happen on the road. From cars slamming on brakes in front of you, to people cutting in and out of traffic, you need to have your undivided…

A reason why texting and driving is a serious issue is because it causes a disproportionate amount of accidents every year. In 2012, 3,328 people were killed and 421,000 were injured in distraction-affected crashes (NHTSA). It’s a shocking realization that so many lives are taken every year over something that could have been simply avoided, yet the number of accidents still continue to rise. Part of the reason that so many lives are being taken away is because driving while using a cellphone is a distraction that can inevitably hinder…
