Okonkwo was a man willing to get the job done, no matter what it took.
“He was a man of action, a man of war.” (10) For instance, during his experience as a warrior, he was the first to bring back a human head. He prized his standard of excellence by never doing anything half heartedly. “ Okonkwo never did anything by halves.” (165) He went above and beyond expectations to show his wealth and success, as illustrated when he was leaving his motherland and coming out of exile. His choice to pursue a culturally traditional masculine role in his family showed that he was the head of the house and in charge of all of the
relationships.
Although deeply observant of his culture’s rules, Okonkwo felt that his life was directed by his free will to make choices and direct his ambition to success. “His fame rested on solid personal achievement.” (3) Very early in his life, he realized he could direct his accomplishments to gain personal success. This was illustrated in his success in wrestling, farming and community leadership. “Even in the first year of exile, he began to plan for his return.” (171) Although people in the Ibo culture believed their destinies were controlled by their gods, he believed his actions and choices were within his control and he would become the lord of his clan. No matter what happened to him to contradict his believe in the power of his free will, he believed that his choices directed his future success.
People can choose to excel and lead prosperous lives. It is within their power to direct their destiny through their choices. Okonkwo was a prime example of how one’s choices impact their ability to achieve greatness. Although he believed he had achieved greatness in his life, it was best illustrated in the choices he made not his actions.
