This Goldfish Would You Wish

Human relationships are so fragile, even a single sentence can ruin them. Our relationships make us who we are, whether it’s a loving relationship or one between enemies. Our relationships affect who we are on a very deep level. The way we interact with others affects relationships. To sum up what I’m saying the way we act affects our relationships and causes some to be made and some to be changed or even lost. This theme is present in the stories “What, of This Goldfish, Would You Wish?”, “The Wife’s Story”, and “My So-Called Enemy” as they all have to do with the way relationships affect us.

In the short story “What, of This Goldfish, Would You Wish?” by Etgar Keret the main character Sergei acts consistently with his three wishes. Each time he uses a wish he uses it to help someone else. In the middle of the story it is explained that he used his first two wishes for good. He unintentionally harms a young photographer that
The story begins sounding like it’s a human narrating. Subtle hints that they aren’t are given in the story. The wife becomes suspicious of her husband and discovers he is not what she had seen. She watches her husband transform into something else, she sees him become a human. Then he is killed by the pack. This story shows that often when people hide behind a false image, when that false image is lost the relationship may be destroyed.

The documentary “My So-Called Enemy” directed by Lisa Gossels shows what happens when people are taught to hate each other but learn that they aren’t bad people when they actually get to know one another. In the documentary two groups of girls, one Israeli and one Palestinian learn to respect one another. They grew up knowing only hate for one another and learned that what they had been told their parents was wrong. They learned that the other were not bad people just because of their
