Tyler’s search for identity was very obvious throughout the story. The past couple years of Tyler’s life had been dreadful. This love was shown throughout the whole story. Thomas was not present in the auditorium when the shooting began, but Sylv was. The search for love was shown when the first thing that came to Thomas’s mind was “I have to get to my sister. I can’t fail her again.” (Nijkamp, 34). Thomas then called 911 and scrupulously tried to find a way to get to his sister. Thomas found a way to distract Tyler while he converged everyone together and directed them out of the auditorium. When Tyler saw all of the students being directed out of the auditorium by Thomas he started shooting abruptly and happened to kill Thomas. Sylv later found out that Thomas was killed during the shooting and she was devastated. Sylv said that she had remembered how Thomas loved to be outside riding horses or running when it was storming. His family always worried but he would say “No one will ever catch me. Not even death.” (Nijkamp, 244). This broke Sylv’s heart into two. The love between the two siblings was shown by their fight to save each other during this horrific scene. Not only was Thomas and Sylv’s love shown throughout the story but so was the love between all of the students and
