Chapter 1
1. Make a prediction about how the quote at the opening of the chapter might relate to the main character Lily?
Quote: “The queen, for her part, is the unifying force of the community; if she is removed from the hive, the workers very quickly sense her absence. After a few hours, or even less, they show unmistakable signs of queenlessness.
–Man and Insects”
The quote at the beginning of the chapter relates to Lily’s mother. In this chapter Lily states “She was all I wanted. And I took her away.” Lily also tells the reader how her father hated talking about her mother when Lily wanted to know about her. I personally believe Lily’s home feel apart after the death of her mother. The quote at the beginning of the chapter talks about what would happen if the queen was absent and how the bees would miss her. The queen bee symbolizes the mother and the worker bees symbolize Lily and T-Ray. When the mother left, Lily and T-Ray sunk in chaos because Lily’s mother was absent from their lives.
2. How would you characterize Rosaleen? What type of person is she? Use evidence from the text to support your answer.
I would characterize Rosaleen as a sassy woman who has a strong belief in change. She has a warm heart. Rosaleen’s reaction to the Civil Rights Law being passed seemed like she was waiting for change to come. In some ways, she seemed to be relieved. She cared for Lily as if she was her own daughter and gives her love and affection .I can tell she cares deeply for Lily because she had made her a special cake on her birthday when her father did not do a thing for her. Rosaleen also seems like a fearless lady because of how she addressed the men on page 32. She knew what she was risking in the action. Over all, I think Rosaleen is a strong woman who gives people the respect they deserve. Rosaleen is a person who can treat someone with compassion irrespective of their
