Thomas In The Kite Runner
Boring. Just like this intro. Uninteresting, monotonous, repetitive. Completely and utterly unimaginative. Just like this intro Thomas from the Maze Runner Series lacks creativity and interesting characteristics. He is undoubtedly one of the most flat, stagnant and boring characters in literature, which is surprising considering the rest of the story is filled with interesting characters and the plotline is creative. Thomas lacks interesting character traits that would make him distinctive and stand out amongst other young adult heros, he also has an uninteresting story line that could set up an interesting character. Thomas’ sidekick Theresa doesn't help to make him more interesting or create an interesting dynamic between the two; because …show more content…
As most readers know backstory is crucial to character development, therefore, giving a character a boring backstory will give you a boring character; and Thomas is no exception. All that’s really known about Thomas’ origen is that he was taken from his family by WICKED after his parents both caught the flare virus, however because of this he has lived in the WICKED complex his entire life. He was isolated from the others during his time there, he childhood was essentially him going to classes and doing medical testing. This sets up a reasonably boring character for the rest of the series. Thomas’ story revolves around him saving himself and others, however it often lacks emotion and seems rather flat. Thomas’ story seems considerably more dull in comparison with Newts. In The Fever Code it is disclosed that Newt along with his sister Lizzy, are taking by WICKED, however Newts parents try their best to save them making his origen quite intense. Newt then spends his time in the WICKED complex talking with the other boys in group A and sneaking over to see his sister in group B. Newts back story doesn’t just stop there. Newt faces tons of emotional turmoil that would have given an interesting depth to the story. Towards the end of The Fever Code Newt attempts to kill himself by jumping off the walls of the maze, as sad as this scene maybe it would be interesting to …show more content…
A sidekick is suppose to be an interesting character that helps to keep a story interesting and help out the protagonist. However, Theresa, Thomas’ sidekick in the maze runner is one of the most plain sidekicks out there. Theresa also lacks character development and characteristics, far too many for a character that appears in the story as often as she does. Theresa truly believes that WICKED is good and doesn’t care about who dies and who she hurts unless they are extremely close to her. James Dashner attempts to make her a likeable character throughout the story, however it's hard to like a character you feel you don’t even know. She is made out to be Thomas’ love interest for the first few books which leads to Thomas whining when he can’t find her and being almost dependant on her. Teresa's character doesn’t help to make Thomas’ character more interesting, nor do they compliment each other in anyway. Teresa's character is another reason why Thomas from The Maze Runner is one of the top substance lacking characters in Young Adult

He's very one-dimensional; he represents the greed that inherent to human nature, but he is totally consumed by it. The reader can assume that because Tom is so greedy, he will eventually sell his soul to the Devil in exchange for riches--and so he does. Also, because this type of story (man meets devil, man sells his soul to devil, man suffers dire consequences in the end) is quite typical, it is easy to predict the ending of the story (it seems that the Devil takes Tom to…

Perhaps, Thomas wanted to follow the words of his father, but he also wanted to fit in with the rest of the kids in his school. Yet, the desire to connect with his peers often provoked him to code-switch. In the article Five Reasons Why People Code-Switch, the author, Matt Thompson indicates the process taken to code-switch while trying to fit in. “Very often, people code-switch- both consciously and unconsciously- to act more like those around.” This means that even if Thomas wasn’t totally involved in the hip-hop culture, and the violence, he still pretended to think as those around him to feel welcomed. Then, the relationship with Thomas’s father dominates his mind to figure out his true…
