Founding Father: Thomas Jefferson
Many argue that Thomas Jefferson is one of the most brilliant individuals in American history and someone who lived the American Dream. Thomas Jefferson is remembered as the third President of the United States of America and the author of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson is important to our history because his role as a founding father was crucial in the development of our early government.
Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 in Shadwell, now Albemarle County, in a wooden house built by his father. Jefferson’s father was a slave owner and planter. Thomas Jefferson grew up with his father’s friend’s orphaned children. He had a wealthy family who hired a family tutor when he was five years old. He spent much of his time at Monticello, his house that lay on the 1,000 acre land given to him by his father. He loved his Virginia plantation; there he designed an elegant house. Because of his love for education, he decided to play a part in founding and designing the original buildings for the University of Virginia during his retirement. Jefferson created many changes that shape society to this day. The University of Virginia opened one year before his death. With ought things like the University of Virginia 197,762 students would not be able to attend the college of their dreams. July 4th 1826, Thomas Jefferson died at his house, Monticello, on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson’s epitaph reads: “Here was buried Thomas Jefferson, Author of the Declaration of American Independence, of the statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom, and Father of the University of Virginia.” These three things simply represent a meager piece of Jefferson’s accomplishments, but they represent what motivated him in both his private and public
