Thomas Keller
Thomas Keller born October 14, 1955 is an American chef, restaurateur, and cookbook writer. He and his landmark Napa Valley restaurant, The French Laundry in Yountville, California, have won multiple awards from the James Beard Foundation, notably the Best California Chef in 1996, and the Best Chef in America in 1997. The restaurant is a perennial winner in the annual Restaurant Magazine list of the Top 50 Restaurants of the World. Thomas was the youngest of five boys. In his teenage summers, he worked at the Palm Beach Yacht Club, starting as a dishwasher and quickly moving up to cook. It was here he discovered his passion for cooking. One summer he was discovered by French-born Master Chef Roland Henin and tasked to cook staff meals at The Dunes Club. Under Henin's study, Keller learned the fundamentals of classical French cooking. After The Dunes Club, Keller worked various cooking positions in Florida and soon became the cook at a small French restaurant called La Rive in the Hudson River valley in Catskill, New York. Thomas worked alone with the couple's grandmother as prep cook. Given free rein, he built a smokehouse to cure meats, developed relationships with local livestock purveyors and learned to cook entrails and offal under his old mentor, Roland Henin, who would drop by on occasional weekends. After three years at La Rive, unable to buy it from the owners, he left and moved to New York and then Paris, apprenticing at various Michelin-starred restaurants.
In 2005, he was awarded the three star rating in the inaugural Michelin Guide for New York for his restaurant Per Se, and in 2006, he was awarded three stars in the inaugural Michelin Guide to the Bay Area for The French Laundry. He is the only American chef to have been awarded simultaneous three star Michelin ratings for two different restaurants.     Helen Keller was a famous icon in the 20th century. She played a leading role in some of the most political, social, and cultural movements. She was born in Alabama on June 27, 1880 and at the age of 19 months old she all of the sudden lost her hearing and vision. She started to learn sign language when she was about 9 years old but she couldn’t tell what she was saying, but she was learning. One day she feeling the water and ran her hand underneath it. She was able to spell out water with her hand and by then she had learned over 30 words in sign language. When she was 10 years old she started to understand reading and writing which was wonderful for a deaf and blind girl. Helen was desired to speak so she got her first speech teacher, Miss Sarah Fuller. She was also very determined to go to college, and she did end up going to college in 1898. Helen was accepted to Cambridge School for Young Ladies to prepare for Radcliffe College. She got into Radcliffe in the fall of 1900 and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1904. Helen continued to study and stay recognized with the today’s world. She worked on and off for 50 years on her book called The Story of My Life and it was finally published in 1903 in Ladies Home Journal. Helen never forgot about the other people who were deaf and blind as well. She was willing to help them out by appearing before legislatures, presenting lectures, writing articles, and showed everyone how much she could accomplish without her eyes or ears. For 44 years she was a member of the American Foundation for the Blind. Over the years she received many awards because she inspired many people with her words and how wonderful she was. In 1965 she was one of 20 to be elected for the Woman’s Hall of Fame at the New York World’s Fair. Helen Keller and Eleanor Roosevelt received the most votes among the 100 nominees.
