With its Mediterranean climate, country setting with scenic mountains, world-class dining, famous wines and an abundance of luxury hotels and bed and breakfasts, the Napa Valley is the perfect vacation destination. With over three hundred wineries and vineyards to visit and wonderful dining experiences throughout the valley you can’t go wrong. There are many different reasons to come and enjoy the Napa Valley. One reason is the wineries. The Napa Valley is only thirty-eight miles long and about five miles wide and produces some of the best dirt to grow some of the greatest grapes. And, great grapes lead to great wine. You can find Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Malbec, Petite Syrah and several others. That is a lot for such a small area. Robert Mondavi realized the potential of the Napa Valley when he began growing grapes in Oakville. Today, his winery produces excellent wines and his Opus One winery produces outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon. One of the things that would make for a great experience in the Napa Valley would be a wine cave tour. Visitors get the behind-the-scenes look at the wineries and will see thousands of barrels of wine just sitting there aging. Some wineries let their visitors taste straight from the barrel. Some barrels have been there for a few months and some have been there for a few years, depending on the wine. Red wines, such as Merlots and Cabernets, take longer to age than white wines. Another reason one might want to visit the Napa Valley is for the food. The restaurants in the valley are some of the best in the world. For example, the French Laundry- Built in 1900 as a saloon that later became French steam laundry. The rustic two story stone cottage is surrounded by a lush country garden.
