After Marvel announced that the role of Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok was given to Tessa Thompson, an Afro-Latina actress, a lot of black women celebrated. Her casting is already a success on its own and yet it provides other black women in Hollywood a great opportunity as well.
For many years, black women have been struggling in getting represented in superhero movies. Marvel has been producing a string of hit films for nine years and black women representation has clearly been a bit sluggish.
Zoe Saldana is the only black woman who has been casted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in Guardians of the Galaxy. Even so, her role as Gamora also raised questions on black women being covered in makeup for a role.

However, the only clear thing to both readers and viewers is the fact that she is a strong female warrior who sees herself as equal to men.
With the introduction of another black actress playing a superhero role, what does this mean for the MCU? For now, it appears that this shows an opportunity for more black actresses in superhero movies in the future. Whether it’s a superhero role or perhaps, a supporting character like Spiderman: Homecoming’s Zendaya and Laura Harrier, it shows that the MCU is finally opening its doors to black women.
In 2018, we can expect more black women in the upcoming Black Panther movie such as Lupita Nyogo. Angela Basset, Letitia Wright, and Danai Gurira on screen with the black superhero. You’ll also see black a female villain played by Hannah John-Kamen in Ant-Man and the Wasp.
We’ll find out how these black women will take part in the future stories in the Avengers film. Black fans are continuing to push for more black female superheroes to make sure that black women are represented in the MCU.
