March 15th 2016, in Composition II, Mrs. Henry assigned her class to read different poems. After that she called the groups up to the front to answer a question at the end of the poem. One stood out the most out of all the ones discussed. The questions asked were how old do you believe the speaker was at the time he recalls in the second and third stanzas, and what details suggest this age? In the poem, "Those Winter Sundays" the speaker, Robert Hayden, suggests an by his feelings, actions and the father's actions.
First, an age is suggested by the speakers feelings. However, the feeling that the audience sees is later on when Robert Hayden is appreciating the work his father did for him. The speaker in this poem was obviously
the author reminiscing on his childhood. Robert Hayden tells the audience, "No one ever thanked him" (line 5). He realizes how cold it was, but didn't do anything. In fact, his father was the one that would warm the house up for him.
Secondly, an age is suggest by the speakers actions. The author demonstrates that it is a child that is reminiscing on the past. The audience comprehends this from the fact that at the time that this poem was written boys and girls started working at an early age. The speaker is clearly still dependent on his fathers work. Therefore, this means that the author does not yet provide for himself.
Lastly, his father's actions suggest to the reader that the author was at a young age in the second and third stanzas. The father figure in this poem is a hard worker. He is the one that provides for his family. He woke up early on a "blueblack cold" (2) morning while everyone else was asleep and warmed the house up for his family. The speaker also says that has good shoes were polished when he woke up. Since, the father is doing all this by himself and has no help from his son at the time this leads the reader to believe that the author was very young. The age suggested would be 4 to 9 years old.
In conclusion, the speakers provides many details determining his age at the time. He gave us details about his feelings, actions and his father's actions. For the time that this was written in 1962 young adults would be of much more help to their parents versus today's society. This concludes a young age for question number two.
