Three Major Muscles
There are many different muscles groups that are used during exercise. Some of the main muscle groups are hamstrings, quads, glutes, and pectoral muscles. There are different muscle within each muscle group. In the hamstring muscles, there are three main muscles: semitendinosus, semimembranosus, and biceps femoris. In the quad muscles there are four main muscles: rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius, and vastus medialis. There are three main muscles in the glutes: gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus. There are also three main muscles in the pectoral group: latissimus dorsi, and pectoralis major. Each muscle group has a specific function to perform in the body. The quad muscles focus more on the stabilization of the knee. Rectus femoris specifically aids in extending the knee and flexing of the thigh. The vastus lateralis is focused more on extending and then stabilizing the knee. Vastus medialis extends the knee and fibers throughout this muscle help to stabilize the patella bone, in the knee. The vastus lateralis also focuses on mainly the extension of the knee. The hamstring muscles, as a group, focus on the movement of muscles in the thigh and the flexion of the knee. Biceps femoris helps to aid in the extension of thigh muscles and the flexing of the knee. Biceps femoris also helps to be able to move the leg from side to side. Semimembranosus help the extension of the thigh muscles and rotating the leg medially. Semitendinosus also helps to extend thigh muscles and help to flex the knee muscles. Along with semimembranosus, the semitendinosus aids in the medial movement of the leg. The glute muscles are powerful muscles that aid the the movement of the thigh and the leg overall.
