Pondering countless people’s minds is whether it should stay open, since Three Mile Island (TMI) is shutting down in 2019. TMI should say goodbye because of 3 main reasons. Three Mile Island is too much work, it can cause accidents, and it is not helping the earth. Plant owners spend numerous amounts of money to produce nuclear energy to power houses. After the reactor shut down, one of the valves stayed open, the hot water streamed out of the valve and the reactor overheated. Another mishap is very hard to detect before it happens, and it is difficult to evacuate and fix the situation. An enormous byproduct of nuclear power is nuclear waste, and is very dangerous to anything that touches it. Imagine a truckful of waste crashing and spilling, it would be a disaster for everyone in the area. Everyone would have to evacuate, and if the nuclear waste would happen to runoff into the river, contaminated water would be present for a very long time, and we might not ever clean it up. People believe that nuclear power is clean and is good for the environment. Well, they are wrong because they don’t think of the water used to produce nuclear energy. Power plants use nuclear fission to heat up water into steam. The steam turns a turbine, which powers a generator, that produces electricity. The plant releases the water right back into the river while it is still hot. Consequently, the area around the river is very unpopulated due to the organisms’ contact with the hot water, because organisms in the area die in the hot water that they come in contact
