One issue needing change is children having obesity. Obesity is a chronic disease that has the potential to cause other diseases as well. For children, this has the potential to end their lives early, or continue to have obesity the rest of their lives. To help children live healthier lives, parents have to be role models of a healthy lifestyle. Parents should not only be involved directly with their child's food choices, but also be a positive …show more content…
influence towards healthy eating and physical activity. Obesity prevention programs in school systems would also help educate children about the benefits of nutrition, healthy living, and physical activity. Schools and parents must collaborate together to promote healthy living for children and adolescents.
Another epidemic in America is the growing rate of unemployment.
An estimated six million people are unemployed, five million people in poverty, and about twenty million people in deep poverty. This can hurt America economically and socially. There would be more spending government welfare programs, higher rates of poverty, and higher crime rates across the nation. To restore the economy, the federal government should begin investing in the nation's infrastructure. Rebuilding bridges, schools, roads, neighborhood parks, and libraries would boost our economy by creating more job opportunities. Another federal action that would be beneficial would be increasing the minimum wage. More than four million people would be lifted out of poverty if the minimum wage is increased from seven dollars to ten dollars. People need to have jobs with decent wages to be above the poverty line. A third solution would be an anti-poverty policy regulated in business for paid family leave and paid sick days. Two proposals that would be beneficial are The Family and Medical Insurance Leave Act (FAMILY ACT) and the Healthy Families Act. These two acts would give paid leave protection to workers and help workers to have seven job-protected sick days a year. These bills would keep workers from sacrificing needed income to take care of sick children and loved ones, thus increasing wages for more
people.
A more prominent social issue in the U.S. is deaths related to gun violence. Gun violence has taken its toll on the America public over the past seven years due to the sinful nature of people. In the bible (Matthew 26:52) Jesus said, "...for all that take the sword shall perish with the sword." Because more Americans are purchasing guns, the annual average for gun-related deaths is over thirty-five thousand, with a daily average of ninety-six-gun deaths. Exposure to gun violence can cause post-traumatic stress disorder, desensitization to violence, and an increase in violent activity. To reduce gun violence in the future, teaching children gun safety, prohibiting those with mental-health issues from purchasing guns, banning the sale of assault weapons, and promoting gun control laws that would make sure communities are safer in America. Seeking out ways to stop criminals from accessing dangerous weapons is the key to protecting U.S. citizens.
In essence, the quality of American society declining due to the increasing severity of these social issues. Reducing the rates of unemployment, obesity, and gun violence will benefit the economy and society of the U.S. Most importantly, it's the people of this nation that must advocate changes of the society they live in.
