Gabriel Garcia Marquez writing style has been linked to a style of literature known as magical realism. Magical realism is a style of literature that combines fantasy with realism by using superstitions, exaggerations, dreams come true, universal humor and twist of fate. During the course of the novel “Chronicles of a Death Foretold” Garcia Marquez uses all of these elements. There are three main themes that can be found in “Chronicle of a Death Foretold”. First is the importance of honor in the Latin American culture. Second is the emphasis on male pride or machismo. Lastly, is the role of rituals in the Latin American culture. The importance of honor to the Latin American culture is evident in “Chronicles of a Death Foretold”. There are several instances we can see upholding one’s honor is important in this culture. First, the killing itself is committed in order to gain back the honor that Angela Vicario lost when Santiago Nasar supposedly took her virginity. For example, "The lawyer stood by the thesis of homicide in legitimate defense of honor, which was upheld by the court in good faith (pg. 48)." Another instance is when killing their sister perpetrator the Vicario’s brother restore the family honor. For example, "the twins declared at the end of the trial that they would have done it again a thousand times over the same reason (pg. 48)."
