Through The Tunnel
In “Through the Tunnel,” Doris Lessing is the theme. The author uses Jerry, mom, and the setting to develop the theme. The theme is growth requires risk and struggle. Doris Lessing, talks about this creative short story that talks about Jerry, 12 years old, an English boy, has a goal set and he is on a mission to swim through the tunnel for two minutes and has to work hard to achive it. Jerry, the young English boy helps build the theme as he shows determination, hard work and a positive mindset. Jerry, 12 years old does not like to listen to his mother during the story. He is very curious about what is ahead of him in life. Jerry has a lot ahead of him in life, like he is 12 years old and he has stuff to do, and also a lot to look for when he grows up. Jerry continues to grow and takes risks physically and mentally. It is important for Jerry to swim through the tunnel, on a literal level, because he wants to be able to fit in with the older, local boys who could do it. Those boys seemed like men to Jerry. She is the typical type of mother. She is protective over her little son, Jerry. She is also always worried about Jerry and the real world around her. She is the type of pale person you would call her. She is pale by her skin, and her appearance. The mom is very anxious in the story because she has been around Jerry her whole life. She has very high anxiety because she doesn't know any better than to have anxiety when her kid is alone, away from his mother, or just gone. Mom is very concerned about Jerry because she cares about him, she is again, very worried about him. She is concerned because that is her job to do. She has to take care of her son, Jerry.
