The Thumb: The Pollex

Bone Structure Muscle Attachments To Thumb
Intrinsic (thenar)

Abductor PollicisBrevis
• Abducts the Thumb basal (carpometacarpal) Joint along with other muscles which palmar abduct and radial abduct the basal joint, and extends the thumb interphalangeal Joint
Adductor Pollicis (Tendon)
• radially adducts the thumb basal joint along with other muscles which radially adduct the basal joint, and extends the thumb’s interphalangeal Joint
First Dorsal Interosseous
• flexes, radially deviates (abducts) and pronates the index MCP joint and radially adducts the thumb basal joint along with other muscles which radially adduct the basal joint. Also (weakly) extends the index PIP and DIP joints
Flexor Pollicis Brevis
• Flexes the thumb MCP joint and flexes/pronates the basal joint along with other muscles which produce thumb opposition

Opponens Pollicis
• flexes and pronates the basal joint along with other muscles which produce thumb opposition
Extrinsic
Abductor Pollicis Longus (Tendon)
• Abducts the thumb basal joint, along with other muscles which radially abduct the thumb. Also radially deviatesthe wrist along with other muscles which produce wrist radial abduction
Extensor Pollicis Brevis (Tendon)
• Extends the thumb MCP joint and weakly abducts the thumb basal joint, along with other muscles which produce radial and palmar abduction
Extensor Pollicis Longus (Tendon)
• Extends the thumb Interphalangeal Joint
Flexor Pollicis Longus (Tendon)
• Flexes the thumb Interphalangeal Joint (primary) and Metacarpophalangeal Joint (weak)
Joints In The Thumb • Interphalangeal Joint (IP)
• Metacarpophalangeal Joint (MCP) o These two joints are Hinge Joints which essentially provide the same function as a door.
• Carpometacarpal Joint (CMC) o This joint in the thumb, is a Sattle Joint; meaning there is a sattle like bone that is being wrapped around by a “U” shaped bone to allowed for a back and forth directive

There are six types of synovial joints. Gilding joints, such as carpals of the wrist, these joints allow only gliding or sliding movements. Hinge joints, act as a door hinge does, allowing flexion and extension in just one plane. Pivot joints one bone rotates about another. Condyloid joints two bones fit together with an odd shape these joints allow flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction movements. Saddle joints, which resemble a saddle, permits the same movement as the condyloid joints, but allow greater movement. Ball and socket joints allow all movement except gliding. Compound joints modified hinge joints condylar joints (condyles of the femur join with condyles of tibia) and saddle joint (lower end of femur joins with patella.) The function of the synovial joints are to allow…

One thing I left out in my response was about fixators. Basically, fixators are a type of synergist, that prevents movement at another joint. This allows for maximum movement of the main muscle. Basically at elbow flexion, the muscles of the scapula help keep it still due to the fixators (Martini and Nath 2009 p. 340). This allows for flexion to be isolated to the elbow.…

The abductor pollicis longus in flying squirrels is a prominent muscle, despite the fact that the thumb is minuscule. It takes origin from the extensor surfaces of the radius and ulna, as in other squirrels, and the tendon passes through the radial compartment of the wrist superficial to the tendons of the extensor carpi radialis brevis and longus muscles. The tendon of the abductor pollicis longus bifurcates with one part inserting on the metacarpal of the thumb and the other part inserting on the falciform bone, the tendon to the falciform bone is the larger of the two. Between the dorsal surface of the falciform bone and the palmar surface of scapholunate, there is an arthrodial joint. The falciform is connected to the styliform cartilage on the opposite side of the wrist by a…
